The guidelines provided below are meant to help you determine if your existing computer will work adequately on the Hiram College campus’s network. If you have any particular questions, feel free to call the Help Desk at (330) 569-5313. Our hours are Monday thru Friday from 8:30am to 5:00pm. Our summer hours are Monday thru Friday from 9:00am to 5:00pm.

Operating Systems that are supported:

This is one of the latest Operating Systems available. Students wishing to upgrade theit current Operating System from Vista are able to purchase Microsoft Windows 7 at the Hiram College Bookstore or at a discount on the Microsoft website.

Vista works okay with the Hiram College’s network. It is not recommended to use on campus.

Microsoft Windows XP Home or Windows Pro still works well on Hiram College’s network. But it is not recommended for use on campus.

There are two different versions of each Operating System: 64-bit and 32-bit. Make sure to understand the value and issues each one may have. 64-bit Windows is able to handle larger amounts of memory more effectively than a 32-bit Operating System . A 64-bit OS may need to have a specific printer if a personal printer is purchased. The OS can use programs that were not designed for 64-bit computing, but anti-viruses may have compatability issues. A 32-bit computer is capable of only using 32-bit programs, but it does not need any special printers or devices.

Caution: Students wishing to use other Operating Systems, such as any Macintosh Operating Systems or a type of Linux, are permitted to do so. However, please be aware that there is currently not as much support provided for non-Windows Operating Systems.

Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows 98, Windows 95, and Windows ME are NOT supported nor allowed to be on the Hiram College Network.
Recommended Software:

All campus lab computers come with Microsoft Office Professional 2010 (Word, Excel, Access, and Power Point.) You can purchase Microsoft Office 2010 Professional for your personal computer through the Hiram College Bookstore (with an academic discount). You may also purchase a discounted version on the Microsoft website.

Any browser will be sufficient for most of your work. However, some campus web pages have been optimized for viewing in Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox. Internet Explorer should be included in all versions of Windows, and the most recent version (9.0) is available for free from Microsoft’s website.

A version of an anti-virus product that automatically updates virus definitions is required for all students living on-campus. Microsoft Security Essentials is a free anti-virus product that our network supports.

We can support many other anti-virus programs as well. Norton Symantec Anti-Virus, McAfee Anti-Virus, Kaspersky, and Avast! are just a few other anti-virus programs that we support.

    Hardware recommendations:

Because computer hardware availability and pricing is changing on a daily basis, the information provided here is meant as a general guideline.

For those looking to purchase a new computer, most new computers have what a student needs to in order to be successful at Hiram College.

    • 160GB or larger hard disk drive
    • 3GB of RAM or more
    • Any of the i core processor series or a dual core processor
    • CD/DVD drive

If a student is looking to own a gaming computer, it is advised to upgrade the following:

    • Hard drive
    • RAM or memory
    • video card/graphics card

Note: All computers must have a 10/100 Mbps Ethernet Card and a Wireless Card installed to have network access.

Modems or routers are not to be used on campus; attempting to connect any of those devices to the network will result in damage to both your computer and the network equipment, for which you will be held responsible.

Students who own printers are welcome to bring them on campus. There is no need to purchase a printer. However, each dorm has a computer which contains a network printer. Color prints or copies can be made in the campus Service Center or Library for a minimal fee. The Kennedy Center also has a computer lab in which you may print from two of the network printers installed there.

Finally, please review the Acceptable Use Policy. Failure to comply with the AUP may result in the restriction or removal of your campus network privileges.

Moodle is a service that Hiram makes available to students and faculty to help them organize their classes. Moodle isn’t used by every professor, and the ones that use it don’t always use all of its features. The main purpose of Moodle is for professors to provide a database of resources for students attending a specific class. This can be done in the form of uploaded documents, links, and other forms of media. Below you will find information on how to use your Moodle account.

Faculty and Staff mail accounts are referred to as “OutlookLive” account/mailboxes.  These are externally hosted mailboxes through Microsoft.  You can access them by going to http://outlook.com or by clicking on the link found at http://home.hiram.edu

The following link will take you to a Microsoft support site that should be able to answer most of the question you might have when using your new mailbox.

    http://www.microsoft.com/liveatedu/LiveAtEdu-Resources.aspx

There are many great benefits to having our mail hosted by Microsoft.  Just to name a few would be vastly increased mailbox capacity, increased mobile support and availability, as well as providing externally hosted communications in the case of an emergency/disaster.  You will find an enriched Online Web Access interface (OWA) that looks and feels much like your existing Outlook Client.

Please direct any questions about this to the Dray Helpdesk x5313.
