Mayle and Roberts Earn All-NCAC Basketball Honors

CLEVELAND, OHIO — Hiram College women’s basketball player and senior guard Brittany Mayle (Mantua/Crestwood) along with men’s basketball player and junior guard Chris Roberts (Cleveland/Kennedy) have earned second-team All-North Coast Athletic Conference honors for their individual efforts this season. The Terrier women ended the season with a 4-22 overall record and 3-13 in the NCAC.

Mayle earned all-conference honors for the first time in her career. She averaged 10.6 points per game and shot 29.5 percent (78-of-264) from the field. She was second on the team in four statistical categories including rebounding (4.6 rpg.), three-pointers made (19), assists (67) and steals (27). Mayle was the team’s top free-throw shooter at 80.0 percent (100-of-125).

For her career, Mayle averaged 8.3 ppg. in 88 career games and had a 27.1 lifetime shot percentage (199-of-735). She also averaged 4.1 rpg. in addition to tallying 260 assists, 112 steals and ten blocked shots. Mayle had a 77.8 free-throw percentage (267-of-343) which ranks second best all-time in program history. Her 260 assists also rank fourth best all-time.

The Terrier men ended the season with a 12-14 overall record and 9-7 in the NCAC.

Roberts earned All-NCAC accolades for the second time in his career after earning first-team honors last season. This winter, he was the team’s leading scorer with a 14.2 ppg. average. He was also amongst the team’s leaders in field goal percentage at 41.9 percent (113-of-270). In addition, he led the team in free-throws made (114) and free-throws attempted (158) for a 72.2 percentage. Roberts was second on the team in rebounding (4.7 rpg.), assists (55) and steals (29).

Women’s Basketball Defeated by Wittenberg University

SPRINGFIELD, OHIO — The Hiram College women’s basketball team was defeated by Wittenberg University, 59-43, tonight (Tuesday, Feb. 23) in a quarterfinal game of the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament at Pam Evans Smith Arena in Springfield. [Game Stats]

With the loss, the Terriers end their season with a 4-22 overall. The Tigers improve to 18-7 overall and will advance to the semifinals on Friday (Feb. 26).

Hiram kept the game close in the opening minutes of the first half and had an early one-point lead, 3-2, on a three-pointer by junior guard Brittany Mayle (Mantua/Crestwood) at the 18:40 mark. Wittenberg then tallied four straight points to take the lead and never trailed in the game the rest of the way. The Tigers slowly began to pull away throughout the remainder of the period as a 10-0 scoring run by Wittenberg near the midway point of the half, resulted in their first double-digit lead, 18-7, with 9:17 on the clock. Hiram battled back to within five points, 21-16, at the 5:25 mark, but Wittenberg would end the half on a 10-2 run to take a 31-18 lead at the break.

In the second half, both teams started out slow as the teams would not record a made basket until the 17:02 mark when Wittenberg connected on a layup that gave the Tigers a 33-18 margin. The Tigers would go on to lead by as many as 25 points, 57-32, with 3:59 left to play en route to the 59-43 final.

Wittenberg shot 35.8 percent (24-of-67) from the field as Hiram shot 25.8 percent (17-of-66) from the floor, including just two-of-20 (10.0 percent) from three-point range.

The Tigers had two players score in double figures led by Stephanie Boardman with a game-tying high 15 points on five-of-16 shooting (31.3 percent) and a game-high 17 rebounds. Carrie Dyer rounded out the high scorers for the Tigers with 13 points.

Hiram had one player score in double figures in senior All-NCAC forward Ashley Drum (Parma/Valley Forge) with 15 points to go along with 11 rebounds.

Women’s Basketball Defeated by Denison University

GRANVILLE, OHIO — The Hiram College women’s basketball team was defeated by Denison University, 85-35, today (Saturday, Feb. 20) in the North Coast Athletic Conference and regular-season finale at Livingston Gymnasium in Granville. [Game Stats]

With the loss, the Terriers end the regular season with a 4-21 overall record and 3-13 in the NCAC. The Big Red improve to 18-7 overall and 10-6 NCAC.

Hiram scored the game’s first points on a basket by senior forward Alex Dellas (Willoughby Hills/South) to give Hiram an early 2-0 lead at the 19:26 mark. Denison answered with a 10-0 scoring run to lead, 10-4, and never trailed in the game again. The Terriers got to within four points on multiple occassions and trailed by five points, 21-16, with 9:14 left before halftime on a successful three-pointer by sophomore guard Tiffany Shields (Bedford Heights/Bedford). The Hiram shooting then went cold as Shields’ triple would be the Terriers’ final made field goal of the period. The Big Red increased their lead to as many as 22 points during the Hiram cold streak with a halftime score of 43-21.

The shooting woes continued for Hiram in the second half as the Terriers didn’t record a made basket until the 8:51 mark with a layup by senior guard Brittany Mayle (Mantua/Crestwood). But Denison had already taken control of the game and cruised to an 85-35 victory.

Denison shot 49.2 percent (31-of-63) from the floor and held Hiram to just 20.4 percent (10-of-49) shooting from the field.

The Big Red had four players score in double figures led by Haley Dahlgard with a game-high 17 points on seven-of-12 shooting (58.3 percent). Serafina Nuzzo was second with 16 points, followed by Shaina Kaiser with 15 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Rounding out the Denison high scorers was Christina Myers with 14 points.

Hiram was led by Dellas with six points on two-of-four shooting (50.0 percent). In addition, freshman forward Amanda Petrusky (Parma/Valley Forge) grabbed a team-high six rebounds.

Hiram will travel to Springfield on Tuesday, Feb. 23 for a quarterfinal game of the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament. The Terriers will be the eighth seed in the tournament and will face the top-seeded Tigers at Pam Evans Smith Arena with tip-off scheduled for 8 p.m.

Women’s Basketball Falls to Allegheny (Pa.) College on Senior Day

HIRAM, OHIO — Senior All-North Coast Athletic Conference forward Ashley Drum (Parma/Valley Forge) recorded a double-double with 14 points and a game and career-high 13 rebounds, but it would not be enough as the Hiram College women’s basketball team lost to Allegheny (Pa.) College, 69-55, tonight (Wednesday, Feb. 17) in the regular-season home finale at Price Gymansium on senior day. [Game Stats]

With the loss, the Terriers drop to 4-20 overall and 3-12 in the NCAC. The Gators improve to 10-14 overall and 7-7 NCAC.

Hiram started the game strong outscoring Allegheny, 15-8, in the first 7:22 of the first half and led by as many as eight points, 23-15, at the 7:29 mark thanks to a layup by junior guard Jess Cowan (Hiram/Crestwood). Allegheny then scored eight straight points to tie the game at 23-23 as part of an overall 16-2 scoring run that gave the Gators a six-point advantage, 31-25, with 2:56 left before halftime. Allegheny increased its lead to as many as seven points, 34-27, with under a minute remaining, but Hiram would tally the final points of the period on a Drum jumper to make the score, 34-29, at the intermission. Drum also grabbed 12 of her 13 total rebounds in the first half.

In the second half, the Terriers cut the deficit to four points on three occassions in the opening minutes, including trailing, 40-36, at the 17:30 mark when Drum connected on another jumper. But that would be as close as Hiram would get, as Allegheny recorded its first double-digit lead, 46-36, with 13:55 left to play and never allowed the Terriers to within six points the remainder of the game, as the Gators went on to the 69-55 final.

Allegheny shot an impressive 50.9 percent (27-of-53) from the floor and Hiram shot 36.1 percent (22-of-61) from the field.

Individually for the Gators, three players scored in double figures led by Emilie Simone with a game-high 24 points on 11-of-14 shooting (78.6 percent). Brittany Bell was second with 16 points followed by Jill Gregory with 11 points. Gregory also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.

Hiram was led by Drum’s 14 points on six-of-12 shooting (50.0 percent) and 13 rebounds. Senior guard Pamela Spencer (Massillon/Washington) was the only other Terriers in double digits with 11 points, nine of which coming from three-point range.

Hiram will conclude the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 20 when the Terriers travel to Granville for a NCAC game against Denison University. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Poor Shooting in Second Half Gives Women’s Basketball Loss Against Oberlin College

HIRAM, OHIO — The Hiram College women’s basketball team shot 25.0 percent (seven-of-28) in the second half which resulted in a 57-45 loss against Oberlin College today (Saturday, Feb. 13) in a North Coast Athletic Conference game at Philips Gymnasium in Oberlin. [Game Stats]

Following today’s game, the Terriers are now 4-19 overall and 3-11 in the NCAC. The Yeowomen improve to 5-18 overall and 4-10 NCAC.

Hiram looked to take control of the game early, beginning the first half with an 11-4 scoring run and led by as many as eight points, 17-9, at the 10:47 mark on a layup by senior All-NCAC forward Ashley Drum (Parma/Valley Forge). But Oberlin began to chip away at the Terrier lead and went on a 12-3 run of its own to give the Yeowomen their first lead of the game at, 21-20, with 2:33 left in the period. The score remained close in the final minutes of the half and an Oberlin bucket with 18 seconds remaining tied the game at 25-25 heading into the locker rooms.

In the second half, Hiram led by two points, 31-29, at the 12:19 mark thanks to a jumper by Drum, but Oberlin regained the lead for good on its next possession and slowly began to pull away. The Yeowomen took over the game with a 12-1 run that spanned 5:42 late in the half to extend their lead to 13 points, 50-37, with 3:18 to go. Oberlin led by as many as 15 points en route to the 57-45 win.

Oberlin shot 42.3 percent (22-of-52) from the floor and held Hiram to just 28.8 percent (17-of-59) shooting from the field.

The Yeowomen had three players score in double figures led by Kelly Warlich with a game-high 18 points on seven-of-12 shooting (58.3 percent). Allison Anderson was second with 16 points followed by Syrea Thomas with 13 points to go along with eight rebounds.

Hiram had one player score in double digits in senior guard Brittany Mayle (Mantua/Crestwood) with 17 points on five-of-19 shooting (26.3 percent), including six-of-seven (85.7 percent) from the free-throw line. She also grabbed a team-tying high six rebounds.

Hiram will host Allegheny (Pa.) College in its final regular-season home game at Price Gymnasium on Wednesday, Feb. 17. It will be senior day with tip-off scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Women’s Basketball Defeated by Ohio Wesleyan University

DELAWARE, OHIO — The Hiram College women’s basketball team was defeated by Ohio Wesleyan University, 63-49, tonight (Wednesday, Feb. 10) in a North Coast Athletic Conference game at Branch Rickey Arena in Delaware. [Game Stats]

Following tonight’s game, the Terriers are now 4-18 overall and 3-10 in the NCAC. The Battling Bishops improve to 16-6 overall and 11-2 NCAC.

Both teams exchanged leads in the early going of the first half and Hiram led, 13-10, at the 13:33 mark thanks to a three-pointer by junior guard Jess Cowan (Hiram/Crestwood). OWU then went on an 8-0 scoring run to regain the lead and never trailed in the contest again as the Bishops outscored the Terriers, 25-7, in the final 13:33 to have a commanding 35-20 lead at the intermission.

OWU led by as many as 22 points, 50-28, near the midway point of the second half. Hiram outscored the Bishops, 29-28, in the period, but the earlier haftime deficit would be too much to overcome as OWU went on to win by the final of 63-49.

OWU shot 45.6 percent (26-of-57) from the field for the game and held Hiram to just 31.3 percent (20-of-64) shooting.

The Bishops were led by Pam Quigney with a game-high 13 points on six-of-11 shooting (54.5 percent) and grabbed eight rebounds. Kayla Gordon was second with 11 points followed by Tyler Cordell and Dany Finck with 10 points each. Finck also tallied a game-tying high nine rebounds.

Hiram was led by senior forward Alex Dellas (Willoughby Hills/South) with nine points on four-of-nine shooting (44.4 percent) to go along with six rebounds. In addition, Cowan grabbed a game-tying high nine boards.

Hiram will continue its two-game road trip on Saturday, Feb. 13 when the Terriers travel to Oberlin for a conference matchup against Oberlin College. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Women’s Basketball Defeats Earlham (Ind.) College in Overtime

HIRAM, OHIO — Junior forward Caitlyn Ruese (Strongsville) scored a career and game-high 21 points to lead the Hiram College women’s basketball team past Earlham (Ind.) College, 65-58, in overtime today (Saturday, Feb. 6) in a North Coast Athletic Conference game at Price Gymnasium. [Game Stats]

Following the win, the Terriers improve to 4-17 overall and 3-9 in the NCAC. The Quakers fall to 2-19 overall and 1-11 NCAC.

Hiram led by as many as eight points in the first half, 23-15, thanks to one-of-two free-throws by senior guard Brittany Mayle (Mantua/Crestwood) at the 6:02 mark. Earlham answered with an 11-0 scoring run to claim a 26-23 advantage with 2:43 left in the half. The Terriers tied the game at 26-26 on a three-pointer by Ruese, but the Quakers would tally the final points of the period to lead, 28-26, at the break.

Earlham increased their lead to as many as five points, 37-32, at the 11:51 mark of the second half and had a 45-43 edge with 3:36 to go. Hiram looked to take control with a 6-0 run that ended in a layup by sophomore gaurd Tiffany Shields (Bedford Heights/Bedford), putting the Terriers up 49-45 with 1:37 left to play. Following an Earlham three-pointer, Mayle would connect on three-of-four free-throws in the final seconds to give Hiram a 51-48 lead. But the Quakers’ Jessica Wooden would hit the game-tying shot with five seconds left, sending the game into overtime.

Both teams exchanged leads in the opening minutes of the overtime period and the Quakers led, 56-55, with 2:55 left. The Earlham shooting then went cold as Hiram added eight free-throws down the stretch en route to the 65-58 victory.

Earlham had two players score in double-figures led by Wooden with 12 points on four-of-12 shooting (33.3 percent). Whitney Sparkman chipped in with 11 points.

Hiram was led by Ruese’s 21 points on six-of-10 shooting (60.0 percent), including shooting seven-of-eight (87.5 percent) from the free-throw line. She also grabbed seven rebounds. Mayle was second in scoring with 13 points and junior guard Jess Cowan (Hiram/Crestwood) rounded out the high scorers with 12 points in addition to pulling down a team-high eight boards.

Hiram will play its next two contests on the road beginning with a NCAC matchup against Ohio Wesleyan University on Wednesday, Feb. 10 in Delaware, Ohio. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Women’s Basketball to Host WBCA “Pink Zone” Event Saturday Against Earlham (Ind.) College

HIRAM, OHIO — The Hiram College women’s basketball team will host its WBCA (Women’s Basketball Coaches Association) “Pink Zone” event on Saturday (Feb. 6) when the Terriers host Earlham (Ind.) College at Price Gymnasium.

The WBCA Pink Zone® initiative is a global, unified effort for the WBCA nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. The WBCA began the WBCA Pink Zone®, formerly known as “Think Pink”, in 2007 as an initiative to raise breast cancer awareness in women’s basketball, on campuses and in communities.

Hiram and the Student Athlete Advisory Committee will also host a “date auction” in conjunction with the “Pink Zone” event and all proceeds will go towards the Susan G. Koman for the Cure Foundation.

Women’s Basketball Defeated by Wittenberg University

HIRAM, OHIO — The Hiram College women’s basketball team was defeated by Wittenberg University, 83-62, tonight (Friday, Feb. 5) in a North Coast Athletic Conference game at Price Gymnasium. [Game Stats]

With the loss, the Terriers are now 3-17 overall and 2-9 in the NCAC. The Tigers improve to 14-6 overall and remain perfect in conference play at 12-0.

Both teams played an entertaining and competitive first half with five ties and seven lead changes. Neither team would lead by more than four points until near the end of the period when Wittenberg outscored Hiram, 12-5, in the final 5:48 to have a 36-29 edge at halftime.

In the second half, the Tigers recorded their first double-digit lead at the 16:46 mark with the score of 45-35. But Hiram fought back and would later cut the deficit to three points, 51-48, on a jumper by senior All-NCAC forward Ashley Drum (Parma/Valley Forge) with 11:46 left to play. Wittenberg answered with a 10-2 scoring that put the Tigers back up by double figures, 61-50, with 8:58 to go and took control for good. The Tigers recorded their largest lead of the game of 21 points with the final score of 83-62.

Wittenberg shot an impressive 50.0 percent (34-of-68) from the field and held Hiram to 36.1 percent (22-of-61) shooting.

The Tigers were led in scoring by Carrie Dyer and Stephanie Boardman with game-highs of 19 points each. Dyer also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds and Boardman added six boards. Amber Lough rounded out the Wittenberg high scorers with 18 points.

Hiram had four players in double-digits led by senior forward Alex Dellas (Willoughby Hills/South) with 14 points on six-of-eight shooting (75.0 percent). Senior guard Brittany Mayle (Mantua/Crestwood) was second with 13 points and junior guard Jess Cowan (Hiram/Crestwood) added 11 points to go along with a team-high eight rebounds. Junior forward Caitlyn Ruese (Strongsville) completed the list of double-figure scorers with 10 points.

Hiram will host Earlham (Ind.) College tomorrow (Saturday, Feb. 6) in a NCAC game at Price Gym. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Women’s Basketball Loses to Allegheny (Pa.) College

MEADVILLE, PA. — The Hiram College women’s basketball team was defeated by Allegheny College, 68-53, tonight (Tuesday, Feb. 2) in a North Coast Athletic Conference game at the David V. Wise Center in Meadville, Pa. [Game Stats]

With the loss, the Terriers drop to 3-16 overall and 2-8 in the NCAC. The Gators improve to 8-11 overall and 5-5 NCAC.

Allegheny never trailed in the game and took control right from the start by scoring the game’s first nine points to take an early 9-0 lead. The Gators later led by as many as 16 points, 23-7, near the midway point of the opening period. Hiram battled back to cut the lead to five points, 34-29, at the 1:38 mark thanks to a layup by senior forward Alex Dellas (Willoughby Hills/South). Following an ensuing Allegheny layup to extend the lead to seven points, neither team would score in the final 1:15 of the half as the Gators took a 36-29 advantage into the locker rooms.

Allegheny took over in the second half, outscoring Hiram, 15-4, in the first 6:04 to lead 51-33 and never looked back. The Gators recorded their largest lead of the game of 20 points on several occassions, including a 68-48 margin with 1:50 left to play en route to the 68-53 final.

Allegheny was led in scoring by Jill Gregory with a game-high 19 points on seven-of-10 shooting (70.0 percent). Brittany Bell was the other Gator in double figures with 13 points.

Hiram had three players score in double figures, led by junior guard Jess Cowan (Hiram/Crestwood) with 12 points who had a perfect shooting night finishing three-of-three from the floor, one-of-one from three-point range and five-of-five from the free-throw line. Freshman guard/forward Amy Geisman (Middleburg Heights/Midpark) was second with 11 points followed by senior guard Brittany Mayle (Mantua/Crestwood) with 10 points.

Hiram will play back-to-back home games beginning with a NCAC matchup against Wittenberg University on Friday, Feb. 5 at Price Gymnasium. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
