Football Defeated by Westminster (Pa.) College in Season and Home Opener
September 4, 2010
HIRAM, OHIO – The Hiram College football team was defeated by Westminster (Pa.) College, 23-6, today (Saturday, Sept. 4) in the season and home opener at the Charles A. Henry Field. [Game Stats]
With the loss, the Terriers begin their season with a 0-1 overall record. The Titans improve to 1-0 overall.
Hiram scored the only points of the opening quarter late in the period on a 30-yard field goal by sophomore kicker Luke Russo (Strongsville/Bedford Chanel), giving the Terriers an early 3-0 lead.
The Terriers added to their lead at the 11:14 mark of the second quarter with another field goal by Russo. This time from 38-yards out, extending the margin to 6-0. Westminster cut the lead in half with a field goal of its own from 33-yards, making the score 6-3 with 8:29 left before halftime. The Titans then took the lead with a two-yard touchdown run by quarterback Shawn Lehocky with 2:15 left to play, giving Westminster a 10-6 advantage. The TD would be the final points of the quarter as the Titans maintained a 10-6 advantage at the break.
During Hiram’s first possession of the third quarter, the Terriers would march 79 yards to the Westminster one-yard line, but could not find the endzone on two attempts, turning the ball over on downs. The missed opportunity proved costly for Hiram as Westminster later added to its lead on a seven-yard TD scamper by John Proano at the 2:17 mark. The Titans failed to convert the extra point attempt, but increased the margin to 16-6. On the ensuing Hiram possession, Westminster put the game away with a 33-yard interception return for a TD by Kyle Allen, capping a 23-point scoring streak with 1:40 left to play in the quarter.
Neither team would find the endzone in the fourth quarter as Westminster went on to the 23-6 victory.
Hiram had a significant advantage in total yards of offense with 355 yards (55 rushing and 300 passing) to Westminster’s 274 yards (198 rushing and 76 passing) for the game.
Individually for the Titans, Proano led the team with a game-high 123 rushing yards in 23 attempts with one TD. Lehocky ended the game with 64 yards on the ground and a score in addition to completing eight-of-17 passes for 76 yard, but threw one interception. Defensively, Cory Meeker and Jake Brown each recorded a game-high 15 tackles. Tom Geraghty would also finish in double figures in tackles with 12.
Hiram was led by sophomore quarterback Brendan Rehor (Bay Village/Bay) who completed 31-of-46 passes for a game-high 300 yards and had one interception. Senior wide receiver Glenn Campbell (Akron/Buchtel) recorded game-highs of eight catches for 130 yards. Defensively, junior Oliver Dickerhoof (Alliance/Central Catholic) led the way with 11 tackles, including two sacks. Junior tw0-time All-North Coast Athletic Conference linebacker Jon Hull (Buford, Ga./Mill Creek) added 10 stops to go along with one fumble recovery.
Hiram will travel to Gambier next Saturday (Sept. 11) for a matchup against Kenyon College in the NCAC opener. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.

2010 Football Preview
August 10, 2010
HIRAM, OHIO – The 2010 Hiram College Terrier football team will enter the season with 36 returning letterwinners and 15 starters with first-year Head Coach Randy Moore and almost entirely new coaching staff taking over the program.
“I am excited to be the new head football coach at Hiram College,” said Moore. “Hiram is a great college that deserves to have a successful football program. The coaching staff, returning players, incoming freshmen and transfers have all worked hard and are looking forward to the 2010 season being initial step in the rebuilding journey.”
The offense will be led by second-year signal caller Brendan Rehor (Bay Village/Bay). As a freshman, Rehor played in all 10 games and completed 118-of-215 passes for 991 yards and five touchdowns. Back to lead the rushing attack will be junior Rodney Jacobs (St. Petersburg, Fla./Seminole) and sophomore Chris Austin (Cleveland/Glenville).
The tandum accounted for 585 of the team’s 799 rushing yards last fall with Austin leading the team in both attempts (105) and yards (299). He also recorded one TD and had a 2.8 yards per carry average. Jacobs led the team in yards per carry average at 4.0 and ended the 2009 campaign with 286 yards in 308 attempts. Also look for senior Luke Lewis (Fremont/St. Joseph) to see his share of carries. He led the Terriers in TD on the ground as a junior with three to go along with 182 yards in 62 carries.
The receiving corps will have its share of youth and inexperience in 2010, but will return senior All-North Coast Athletic Conference wideout Glenn Campbell (Akron/Bucthel). Campbell, who saw time in various roles on the Hiram offense last fall, caught a team-high 42 passes for 437 yards and a team-best four TD receptions. He also rushed for 146 yards with a TD and played quarterback in the “wildcat” offensive scheme while completing 19-of-41 passes for 317 yards. Also looking to make an impact this season at the wide receiver position will be junior Shaun Zalewski (Cleveland/ St. Edward). Zalewski saw most of his playing time in a limited backup role last season with three receptions for 19 yards.
The offensive will be led by five veterans including seniors Andy Horvath (Geneva), Chris Sabo (Munroe Falls/ Archbishop Hoban) and juniors Tyler Barnhart (Peninsula/ Woodridge), Marc Parker (Baton Rouge, La./University Lab School) and Jeff Petrilli (Warren/Niles McKinley). Also look for junior Vincent Grandillo (Tiffin/Calvert) to line up on the offensive side of the ball this season and provide depth after spending last season on the defensie line. A year ago, the offensive line helped lead the way as the Terriers record 2,298 yards of total offense and 229.8 yards per game.
“As an offense, we will look to be as balanced as possible and use the weapons we possess,” said Moore. “We return some quality young men and we will utilize them in a way which best shows their skill set. We will have some new faces on both the offensive line and skill positions but we are lucky to return some great leaders. We are confident in our recruiting class of 2010 and we expect a few of the freshmen to be solid performers on Saturdays this year.”
Defensively, the Terriers will return a host of veteran players, but will be without the services of four-time All-NCAC and two-time All-Ohio lineman Humphrey Caswell. He was also the first Hiram player to garner first-team All-NCAC accolades since joining the conference in 2000.
The experienced secondary will be led this fall by senior Tim Isaac (Macedonia/Nordonia) and junior Mike Brown (Cleveland/Glenville). Brown made 40 stops as a sophomore and had a team-best two interceptions. Isaac added 26 tackles in 2009 with a team-tying high three pass breakups. Also look for senior Brandon Jackson (Akron/Buchtel) to see his share of playing time and make an impact in the secondary. Last season, he finished behind Offutt in tackles with 42 to go along with an interception and a tackle for loss.
The linebackers will be led by junior two-time All-NCAC Jon Hull (Buford, Ga./Mill Creek). Hull led the defense in tackles for the second straight season with 77. He began the season with four straight games with 10 or more tackles, including a season-high 14 stops against Carnegie (Pa.) Mellon. Hull also tallied two-and-a-half tackles for loss, an interception, a fumble recovery and team-tying high three pass breakups. Joining Hull will be junior Oliver Dickerhoof (Alliance/Central Catholic). Dickerhoof had a break out season last year finishing third on the team in tackles with 50, including a tackle for loss. In addition, look for senior Stefhen Offutt (Twinsburg) to be a mainstay at linebacker. Offutt tallied 46 tackles last season which ranked fifth highest on the team. He also recorded five tackles for loss, including a quarterback sack, an interception, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
No everyday starters on the defensive line return from last year’s squad, but the Terriers will have a number of experienced players in 2010. This year, the front line will be led by juniors Brandon Nuby (Spring Hill, Fla./Nature Coast), Adam Shankle (Poland/Springfield Local), Alex Sinclair (South Euclid/Brush) and Robert Woods (Madison). Shankle saw some playing time as a starter near the later half of the season in 2009 and led the returning lineman in tackles with 24 with five-and-a-half takles for loss. In addition, expect to see sophomore Tom Moran (Parma Heights/St. Ignatius) to make an impact in a backup lineman role.
This year’s schedule will see some tough competition for the Terriers, but will get to play three of their first four games at home beginning with hosting Westminster (Pa.) in the season opener on Sept. 4. Hiram will also host back-to-back games against Denison and Oberlin in late September, but will mix in a trip to Gambier for a NCAC showdown against Kenyon on Sept. 11.
Hiram will face a tough set of games making up the month of October with two non-conference road games to Carnegie (Pa.) Mellon on Oct. 2 and NCAC defending champion Wittenberg on Oct. 9. The Terriers then follow that up with a home game against Case on Oct. 16 and will end the month on the road at Wooster on Oct. 30.
Hiram will play host to Allegheny (Pa.) on Senior Day on Nov. 6 and will wrap up the 2010 season at Ohio Wesleyan on Nov. 13 in Delaware.
“We will look at each practice and game in the 2010 season as an opportunity to improve and grow as a football team,” said Moore. “As we approach every season, our first goal will always be to have a winning season.”

OFFICIAL RELEASE
INAUGURAL FOOTBALL CAMP RAISES MORE THAN $20,000 FOR PEDIATRIC BRAIN TUMOR RESEARCH
Otterbein College Hosted Almost 400 High School Players at Lauren’s First and Goal Football Camp
WESTERVILLE, OHIO (June 28, 2010) – Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel and almost 400 high school student-athletes helped to raise more than $20,000 for pediatric brain tumor research during the inaugural Lauren’s First and Goal Football Camp at Otterbein College on Sunday, June 27.
All proceeds from the camp benefit Lauren’s First and Goal Foundation whose mission is to provide financial support for brain tumor research and cancer services, to offer financial and emotional support to families living with pediatric cancer, and to increase awareness of the disease.
“Having worked previously on the East Coast, I knew about Lauren’s First and Goal, about how big it had grown, and what it stood for,” said Otterbein head football coach Joe Loth. “It was a great privilege for our school and coaching staff to host this event at Otterbein.”
The one-day football camp welcomed players from 190 different high schools and nine states for a day of offensive and defensive instruction from more than 75 volunteer college coaches. In addition, Coach Tressel was the featured guest speaker and addressed the campers during lunch time. He also spent time visiting with several pediatric oncology patients from Nationwide Children’s Hospital and their families.
“The community at Otterbein College, especially Coach (Joe) Loth and Coach (Allan) Moore, were tremendous and went out of their way to help make this camp a success in its first year,” said John Loose, who created Lauren’s First and Goal Foundation in honor of his 13-year-old daughter Lauren, a pediatric brain tumor survivor. “Having Coach Tressel there was unbelievable, from the time he spent with the oncology patients to talking to the campers.”
Earlier this month, the foundation hosted its seventh annual camp at Lafayette College in Easton, Pa. Nearly 1,700 student-athletes donated more than $67,000 as part of that event. The camps raise money through a $30 registration fee for each student-athlete as well as non-camper donations.
For the year, Lauren’s First and Goal Foundation has received nearly $250,000 in donations, including a $100,000 gift from the Center for Special Needs Trust Administration. The foundation has now raised more than $1 million since its creation in 2004. Of every dollar received, the foundation donates 90 cents toward the fight against pediatric brain tumors.
More information about the camps and the foundation is available at www.laurensfirstandgoal.org.

Life After The Crash: Marshall U. Coach to Talk About Single Worst Air Tragedy in NCAA History
March 1, 2010
Former Marshall University football coach Carl Kokor is speaking about his role in the 1970 plane crash that killed Marshall’s entire football team.
Kokor was one of the coaches when a plane carrying his team and most of the coaching staff crashed, killing everyone on board. Kokor survived because he and another coach were on a recruiting assignment in Pennsylvania at the time. In the aftermath of the tragedy, Kokor provided support to families of the team and staff that lost loved ones on the plane. He also helped rebuild the football program with a head coach who was a brand new addition to the grieving Marshall family. His perspective enhanced the making of the film “We Are Marshall,” but his personal story has otherwise gone largely untold.
Kokor is invited to guest lecture in “Heroes in Literature and of Today,” a Weekend College literature course with Mary Toepfer. Kokor is an “unsung hero,” one of the many types of heroes being discussed in class. Kokor’s speech, with a question and answer session, is open to the Hiram College community. His talk begins at 6:45 p.m. on Friday, March 12, in Hinsdale 209.

HIRAM, OHIO — Hiram College officials today appointed Randy Moore, 50, to the position of Head Football Coach. Moore comes to Hiram from Otterbein College where he served as defensive coordinator for the past seven years. He replaces Bob Wolfe who retired at the end of the 2009 season.
“Randy is a seasoned and successful coach with extensive experience at the NCAA Div. III level,” said Hiram College Director of Athletics Tom Mulligan. “He is a relentless recruiter and an excellent tactician who has spent the majority of his 27-year coaching career representing selective liberal arts institutions. He is a good fit for Hiram. We’re excited to be able to attract a coach with his experience and energy.”
At Otterbein, Moore was part of the staff which led the 2008 and 2009 teams to 17 victories and the institution’s first berth in the NCAA playoffs. Prior to joining the staff at Otterbein, Moore served as defensive coordinator at Hope College, head coach at Lake Forest College, defensive coordinator at Wartburg College, assistant coach at Michigan Technological University, and assistant coach at New Mexico State University. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Iowa and a master’s degree in educational administration from New Mexico State University.
