Mayle and Roberts Earn All-NCAC Basketball Honors

CLEVELAND, OHIO — Hiram College women’s basketball player and senior guard Brittany Mayle (Mantua/Crestwood) along with men’s basketball player and junior guard Chris Roberts (Cleveland/Kennedy) have earned second-team All-North Coast Athletic Conference honors for their individual efforts this season. The Terrier women ended the season with a 4-22 overall record and 3-13 in the NCAC.
Mayle earned all-conference honors for the first time in her career. She averaged 10.6 points per game and shot 29.5 percent (78-of-264) from the field. She was second on the team in four statistical categories including rebounding (4.6 rpg.), three-pointers made (19), assists (67) and steals (27). Mayle was the team’s top free-throw shooter at 80.0 percent (100-of-125).
For her career, Mayle averaged 8.3 ppg. in 88 career games and had a 27.1 lifetime shot percentage (199-of-735). She also averaged 4.1 rpg. in addition to tallying 260 assists, 112 steals and ten blocked shots. Mayle had a 77.8 free-throw percentage (267-of-343) which ranks second best all-time in program history. Her 260 assists also rank fourth best all-time.
The Terrier men ended the season with a 12-14 overall record and 9-7 in the NCAC.
Roberts earned All-NCAC accolades for the second time in his career after earning first-team honors last season. This winter, he was the team’s leading scorer with a 14.2 ppg. average. He was also amongst the team’s leaders in field goal percentage at 41.9 percent (113-of-270). In addition, he led the team in free-throws made (114) and free-throws attempted (158) for a 72.2 percentage. Roberts was second on the team in rebounding (4.7 rpg.), assists (55) and steals (29).

Early Deficit Gives Men’s Basketball Loss Against Wittenberg University in NCAC Tournament

SPRINGFIELD, OHIO — The Hiram College men’s basketball team fell behind early and couldn’t erase a 17-point first half deficit as the Terriers fell to Wittenberg University, 85-63, tonight (Tuesday, Feb. 23) in a quarterfinal game of the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament at Pam Evans Smith Arena in Springfield. With the loss, the Terriers will end their season with a 12-14 overall record. The Tigers will improve to 20-6 overall and will advance to the semifinals on Friday (Feb. 26).
Wittenberg jumped out early, beginning the game with a 23-6 scoring run in the opening 8:49. Hiram fought back and pulled to within seven points, 35-28, on a layup by sophomore guard Jamaal Watkins (South Euclid/Brush) at the 1:18 mark. Both teams would exchange baskets, but a three-point play by the Tigers to end the half, put Wittenberg up by 10 points, 40-30, at the break.
Hiram would narrow the gap to single figures again early in the second half, 42-34, with a layup by junior forward Babajide Eniola (Washington, D.C./Seed Charter) with 18:23 left to play. But a 7-0 run by Wittenberg put the Tigers back up by double-digits, 49-34, at the 17:26 mark and maintained a double-figure lead the rest of the way. Wittenberg recorded its largest lead of the game of 23 points on multiple occassions en route to the 85-63 final.
Both teams shot well from the floor with Wittenberg shooting 53.2 percent (33-of-62) and Hiram shot 42.4 percent (25-of-59).
Wittenberg was led by Clayton Black with a game-high 17 points on five-of-nine shooting (55.6 percent) and grabbed a game-tying high eight rebounds. Josh McKee was second with 14 points, followed by Mark Snyder with 12 points. Chris Sullivan added 11 points.
Hiram was led by junior guard Deon Milton (Oxon Hill, Md./Seed Charter) with 12 points on 40.0 percent shooting (four-of-10), including 50.0 percent (four-of-eight) from three-point range. Watkins was second with 11 points and junior guard Nick Russo (Strongsville/St. Peter Chanel) rounded out the high-scorers with 10 points. In addition, junior forward Hassan Muhammad (Akron/Buchtel) grabbed a game-tying high eight rebounds.

Men’s Basketball Defeats Denison University in Regular-Season and Home Finale

HIRAM, OHIO — The Hiram College men’s basketball team defeated Denison University, 82-63, this afternoon (Saturday, Feb. 20) in the North Coast Athletic Conference and regular-season finale at Price Gymnasium. [Game Stats]
Following today’s game, the Terriers end the regular season with a 12-13 overall record and 9-7 in the NCAC. The Big Red conclude their regular season with a 7-18 overall mark and 7-9 NCAC.
Both teams played a competitive first half with five ties and 10 lead changes. Denison led by as many as four points in the opening period, 13-9, at the 13:52 mark and had a three-point advantage, 25-22, with 5:42 left before halftime. Hiram outscored Denison, 17-6, in the final 5:42 to record its largest lead of the half of eight points with a halftime score of 39-31.
Hiram recorded its first double-digit lead, 43-32, at the 17:59 mark of the second half thanks to a jumper by sophomore forward Chris Meyer (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) and never looked back. Hiram continued to pull away and posted its largest lead of the game of 25 points, 71-46, with 6:34 left in the game on a jumper by junior guard Glenn Campbell (Akron/Buchtel). Denison would go on an ensuing, 14-2, run to cut the deficit to 13 points, 73-60, with 3:03 to go. But the earlier Terrier lead was too much as Hiram went on to claim an 82-63 victory.
Hiram shot 49.2 percent (31-of-63) from the floor for the game, including 46.7 percent (seven-of-15) from three-point range. Denison shot 37.3 percent (19-of-51) from the field.
The Big Red were led by Brett Tiberi with a game-high 20 points on seven-of-nine (77.8 percent) shooting, including an impressive five-of-seven (71.4 percent) from behind the arc. Larry Farmer was the only other Denison player in double-figures with 13 points to go along with a game-high eight rebounds.
Hiram was led by the duo of Campbell and junior All-NCAC guard Chris Roberts (Cleveland/Kennedy) with 17 points each. Roberts also pulled down a team-best seven boards. Meyer ended the game with 11 points and junior forward Babajide Eniola (Washington, D.C./Seed Charter) rounded out the Terrier high scorers with 10 points, shooting a perfect six-of-six from the free-throw line.
Hiram will be the sixth seed in the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament and will travel to Springfield to face third-seeded Wittenberg University on Tuesday, Feb. 23. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. and Pam Evans Smith Arena.

Men’s Basketball Comeback Comes Up Short Against Allegheny (Pa.) College

MEADVILLE, PA. — The Hiram College men’s basketball team outscored Allegheny College, 13-4, in the final 3:39 of the game in an effort to erase a 15-point deficit, but the rally would fall short as the Terriers lost to the Gators, 80-75, tonight (Wednesday, Feb. 17) in a North Coast Athletic Conference game at the David V. Wise Center in Meadville, Pa. [Game Stats]
Following tonight’s outcome, Hiram is now 11-13 overall and 8-7 in the NCAC. Allegheny improves to 14-9 overall and 11-4 NCAC.
It would be a seesaw battle between the two teams in the first half with 10 lead changes and six ties. Neither team would lead by more than five points with the Gators holding an 18-13 margin at the 9:24 minute mark. Hiram recorded its largest lead of three points, 25-22, with 5:12 left to play in the period thanks to a layup by junior All-NCAC guard Chris Roberts (Cleveland/Kennedy). Allegheny came back to regain the lead and had a 36-33 advantage at the break.
The second half began in similar fashion as the first until nearing the midway point of the half when Allegheny went on a 17-2 scoring run to take a commanding 63-48 lead with 10:14 left to play. But Hiram would come right back as a layup by sophomore forward Chris Meyer (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) sparked a 9-0 run to narrow the gap to six points, 63-57, with 7:14 to go. The Gators answered with another scoring run and increased their lead back to 15 points, 77-62, and looked to be headed to an easy victory with just 3:39 remaining. But a final 13-4 run by Hiram to end the game would get the Terriers to within five points, but time was not on Hiram’s side as Allegheny hung on for the 80-75 victory.
Both teams shot well from the floor for the game with the edge going in favor of Allegheny who shot 45.8 percent (27-of-59). Hiram finished the game shooting 43.9 percent (29-of-66) from the field.
Allegheny had five players score in double figures led by Donte Briscoe with 19 points on eight-of-nine shooting (88.9 percent). Henry Heeter was second with 15 points, followed by Craig Devinney and James Ness with 11 points each. Devone McLeod rounded out the high scorers for the Gators with 10 points.
Hiram was led by Roberts with a game-high 21 points on seven-of-12 shooting (58.3 percent), including going a perfect seven-of-seven at the free-throw line. He also grabbed a game-tying high eight rebounds. Junior guard Deon Milton (Oxon Hill, Md./Seed Charter) was second with 16 points and shot four-of-nine (44.4 percent) from behind the arc. Junior guard Glenn Campbell (Akron/Buchtel) added 11 points to round out the high scorers. In addition, junior forward Babajide Eniola (Washington, D.C./Seed Charter) tied Roberts with eight rebounds.
Hiram will conclude the regular season when it hosts Denison University on Saturday, Feb. 20 in the NCAC and home finale at Price Gymnasium. The game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.

Men’s Basketball Holds Off Kenyon College

HIRAM, OHIO — The Hiram College men’s basketball team defeated Kenyon College, 64-54, today (Saturday, Feb. 13) in a North Coast Athletic Conference game at Price Gymnasium. [Game Stats]
With the win, the Terriers improve to 11-12 overall and 8-6 in the NCAC. The Lords fall to 5-17 overall and 2-12 NCAC.
The score remained close during the first 10 minutes of the first half with both teams tied at 10-10 at the 10:03 mark. Hiram then went on a 7-0 scoring run that ended in a three-point play by junior forward Babajide Eniola (Washington, D.C./Seed Charter) marking the score 17-10 with 5:55 left before the intermission. Hiram continued to pull away and recorded its first double-digit lead of 11 points, 22-11, at the 2:57 mark on a three-pointer by junior guard Nick Russo (Strongsville/St. Peter Chanel). The Terriers would lead by as many as 13 points and had a 27-16 advantage at halftime.
Kenyon began the second half with an 8-0 run to get to within three points and later made it a one possession game, 32-30, at the 15:20 mark. Hiram answered with six straight points that included a layup by sophomore guard Jamaal Watkins (South Euclid/Brush) that gave the Terriers a 38-30 lead with 12:36 to go. The Lords battled back again to get to within five points, but an 8-0 run by Hiram late in the half extended the margin back to double figures, 50-37, with just under seven minutes left. Kenyon narrowed the gap to under 10 points in the final two minutes, but would get no closer than six points as Hiram hung on for a 64-54 victory.
Kenyon had one player score in double figures in Uros Vasiljevik with a game-high 16 points on six-of-10 shooting (60.0 percent), including shooting three-of-five (60.0 percent) from three-point range.
Hiram had a balanced scoring attack with only one player scoring in double digits. Junior guard Glenn Campbell led the team with 10 points on two-of-eight shooting (25.0 percent) and five-of-six (83.3 percent) from the charity stripe. In addition, Eniola grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
Hiram will travel to Meadville, Pa. for a NCAC matchup against Allegheny (Pa.) College on Wednesday, Feb. 17. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.

Men’s Basketball Can’t Overcome Early Deficit Against No. 19 The College of Wooster

HIRAM, OHIO — The Hiram College men’s basketball team was defeated by No. 19 nationally-ranked The College of Wooster, 69-50, tonight (Wednesday, Feb. 10) in a North Coast Athletic Conference game at Price Gymnasium. [Game Stats]
With the loss, the Terriers drop to 10-12 overall and 7-6 in the NCAC. The Scots improve to 18-4 overall and 13-0 NCAC.
Hiram played tough against Wooster in the opening minutes of the first half, but would never lead in the game. The Terriers trailed by a point, 12-11, at the 12:45 minute mark when the Scots went on a 9-0 scoring run to gain some breathing room with a 10-point advantage, 21-11, with 9:23 left in the period. Wooster continued to pull away and reached its largest lead of 22 points on two occassions, including a halftime score of 44-22.
In the second half, the Scots maintained their sizeable lead, but Hiram began to cut into the deficit later in the half thanks to an 8-0 run that ended in a pair of free-throws by junior All-NCAC guard Chris Roberts (Cleveland/Kennedy) making the score 57-43 with 5:38 left to play. But that would be as close as the Terriers would get as Wooster regained control of the game and cruised to the 69-50 victory.
Wooster shot an impressive 47.9 percent (23-of-48) from the field and held Hiram to 33.3 percent (15-of-48) shooting, including 18.2 percent (two-of-11) from three-point range.
The Scots had three players score in double figures led by Ian Franks with a game-high 17 points on three-of-seven shooting (42.9 percent) from the floor and 10-of-13 (76.9 percent) from the free-throw line. He also grabbed seven rebounds. Nathan Balch was second with 14 points and Bryan Wickliffe rounded out the high scorers with 10 points to go along with a game-high 10 boards.
Hiram was led by Roberts with 13 points on two-of-seven shooting (28.6 percent) and eight-of-12 (66.7 percent) from the charity stripe. Junior guard Glenn Campbell (Akron/Buchtel) was the only other Terrier in double-figures with 10 points.

SPRINGFIELD, OHIO — A second half rally by the Hiram College men’s basketball team fell short as the Terriers were defeated by Wittenberg University, 66-58, tonight (Saturday, Feb. 6) in a North Coast Athletic Conference game at Pam Evans Smith Arena in Springfield. [Game Stats]
With the loss, the Terriers fall to 10-11 overall and 7-5 in the NCAC. The Tigers improve to 16-5 overall and 8-4 NCAC.
Wittenberg tallied the first six points of the game to take the early lead, but Hiram fought back and pulled to within a point, 8-7, on one-of-two free-throws by junior forward Hassan Muhammad (Akron/Buchtel) at the 14:56 mark. The Tigers continued to build small leads throughout the period, but the Terriers continued to battle back until the 7:18 mark when Wittenberg put some distance between themselves and Hiram with an 18-4 scoring run to end the half for a 39-23 lead at the intermission.
Hiram came out scoring in the second half with a 21-10 run that ended with a three-pointer by junior All-NCAC guard Chris Roberts (Cleveland/Kennedy) that narrowed the gap to, 49-44, with 7:13 left to play. Following a Wittenberg timeout, the Tigers rattled off six straight points to extend the lead back to double figures at 55-44 with 3:46 to go. Hiram battled back again and pulled to within five points, 57-52, on a triple by freshman guard Alan Sheppard (Wadsworth) at the 1:41 mark. But that would be as close as the Terriers would get as Wittenberg would go on to the 66-58 victory.
Wittenberg had three players score in double figures led by Mark Snyder with a game-high 17 points on seven-of-nine shooting (77.8 percent). He also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. David Nowick and Josh McKee both added 10 points for the Tigers.

GRANVILLE, OHIO — The Hiram College men’s basketball team defeated Denison University, 71-62, tonight (Wednesday, Feb. 3) in a North Coast Athletic Conference game at Livingston Gymnasium in Granville. [Game Stats]
With the win, the Terriers improve to 10-1o overall and 7-4 in the NCAC. The Big Red fall t0 4-16 overall and 4-7 NCAC.
Hiram never trailed in the game and with the score tied at 10-10 in the first half, the Terriers ended the period on a 21-5 scoring run that was capped by one-of-two free-throws by sophomore guard Jamaal Watkins (South Euclid/Brush) and resulted in a commanding 31-15 lead at halftime.
The scoring run carried over into the second half as the Terriers recorded their first 20-point margin, 35-15, with 16:53 left to play thanks to a jumper by junior forward Hassan Muhammad (Akron/Buchtel). Hiram posted its largest lead of the game of 27 points, 54-27, at the 7:42 mark thanks to a jumper by junior guard Glenn Campbell (Akron/Buchtel). Denison would make a run at the Terrier lead in the later half of the period, narrowing the deficit to single digits, 71-62, with 11 seconds remaining. But the rally ended there and the Terriers went on to the 71-62 final.
Hiram recorded one of its best shooting nights of the season, finishing the game with an impressive 50.9 percentage (29-of-57) from the floor. Denison shot 44.8 percent (26-of-58) from the field.
The Big Red was led by Dimonde Hale with a game-high 24 points on 12-of-19 shooting (63.2 percent) and grabbed nine rebounds. Josh Leuchtag rounded out the high scorers for Dension with 11 points. In addition, Larry Farmer pulled down a game-high 10 boards.
Hiram also had two players score in double figures led by junior All-NCAC guard Chris Roberts (Cleveland/Kennedy) with 16 points on six-of-12 shooting (50.0 percent). Campbell was second with 15 points.
Hiram will travel to Springfield for a NCAC matchup against Wittenberg University on Saturday, Feb. 6. The Terriers have won the last three meetings against the Tigers and will look to sweep the season series for the second straight year. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.

Men’s Basketball Defeats Ohio Wesleyan University Led by a Pair of Career-Tying High Point Performances

HIRAM, OHIO — Junior guards Glenn Campbell (Akron/Buchtel) and Deon Milton (Oxon Hill, Md./Seed Charter) both equaled their career marks in points scored with 18 and 16 points respectively to lead the Hiram College men’s basketball team past Ohio Wesleyan University, 79-71, today (Saturday, Jan. 30) in a North Coast Athletic Conference game at Price Gymnasium. With the win, the Terriers improve to 9-10 overall and 6-4 in the NCAC. The Battling Bishops now have indentical records of 9-10 overall and 6-4 NCAC.
Hiram looked to make a statement early in the first half and avenge an earlier season loss to the Bishops by leading by as many as 10 points, 18-8, at the 12:47 mark thanks to a three-pointer by freshman guard Alan Sheppard (Wadsworth). OWU answered with an 8-0 scoring run and eventually tied the game at 19-19 with 10:14 left to play in the period. The Terriers never relinquished the lead and had a six-point advantage on several occassions in the final minutes, including a 40-34 margin with 20 seconds left on a successful layup by sophomore forward Jamaal Watkins (South Euclid/Brush). The Bishops recorded the final points of the half on one-of-two free-throws as Hiram led 40-35 at the intermission.
In the second half, Hiram looked to take control with a 12-point lead, 53-41, thanks to another triple by Sheppard with 14:56 left to play. But OWU would not go away and cut the lead to 56-53 at the 9:41 mark. With the margin remaining three points, 61-58, with just under five minutes to go, Hiram put the game away for good with an 11-0 run that ended in a pair of free-throws by junior forward Hassan Muhammad (Akron/Buchtel) that gave the Terriers their largest lead of the game of 14 points, 72-58, with 2:40 to play. The Bishops got to within single figures in the final minutes, but the earlier Hiram lead was too great as the Terriers went on to the 79-71 final.
Both teams shot well from the floor for the game with the advantage going in favor of Hiram who shot an impressive 56.3 percent (27-of-48) overall and 50.0 percent (10-of-20) from three-point range. OWU shot 44.1 percent (26-of-59) from the field, including 85.7 percent (12-of-14) from the free-throw line. Hiram also out-rebounded OWU, 34-24.
The Bishops were led by Tim Brady with 15 points on six-of-14 shooting (42.9 percent). Andy Winters and Andrew Martin both rounded out the Bishop high scorers with 12 points each. In addition, Pat Pellerite grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
Hiram was led by Campbell’s 18 points on seven-of-11 shooting (63.6 percent). Milton was second with his 16 points, including shooting four-of-five (80.0 percent) from behind the arc. Junior All-NCAC guard Chris Roberts (Cleveland/Kennedy) was the other Terrier in double figures with 12 points and dished out five assists. In addition, junior guard Nick Russo (Strongsville/St. Peter Chanel) tallied a game-high six assists and junior forward Babajide Eniola (Washington, D.C./Seed Charter) pulled down a team-high seven boards.
Hiram will play its next two games on the road beginning with a NCAC showdown against Denison University on Wednesday, Feb. 3 in Granville. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
