Softball’s Whitney Dropsey Named All-American

STARKVILLE, MISS.  –  Hiram College senior softball pitcher/outfielder Whitney Dropsey (Ashland/Hillsdale) earned yet another postseason award and becomes the first Terrier to earn Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division III All-American accolades.  She is also the only player from the North Coast Athletic Conference to be tabbed All-American this season.  [AFCA All-American Teams]

Dropsey was a third-team All-American selection as a utility player after leading Hiram to a 20-17 overall record and made a third straight appearance in the NCAC postseason.  The Terriers also recorded their third 20-win season in the past four years.

This marks the fourth post-season award for Dropsey after earning first-team All-Region accolades for the second time in her career in addition to being named first-team All-NCAC for the third straight season and back-to-back NCAC Player of the Year honors.  In addition, she has been recognized for her efforts in the classroom as a first-team CoSIDA (College Sports Information Driectors of America) ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District for the second consecutive season and third Academic All-District award in her career. 

In 2010, she finished second on the team in batting average at .403 (58-of-144) and led the team in runs scored (26) and stolen bases (11).  She was also third in RBI at 20 to go along with two triples and five doubles.  In addition, Dropsey was the team’s top pitcher with a 1.99 earned run average and a 14-12 record.  She led the team in every statistical category having made 30 appearances, including 24 starts, with 14 complete games, four shutouts and a save.  In 158 innings, Dropsey struck out 127 batters (10 strikeouts shy of her school record 137 she set in 2009).  Against conference opponents, she led the league in hits (29) and was second in total bases (33).  On the mound, Dropsey led the NCAC in innings pitched (80.1), strikeouts (62) and appearances (13) while posting a 7-5 record.

For her career, Whitney is the most decorated and one of the best players in program history.  She owns or shares 12 single-season and career records.  As a pitcher, she owns single-season records for appearances (34), wins (18), innings pitched (182.1), strikeouts (137) and is tied for the single-season save record (one) and fewest walks (13).  Whitney currently owns the career record for wins (40), lowest ERA (2.48), appearances (89), winning percentage (.611) and strikeouts (322).   In addition, she also owns the career record for stolen bases (43).

Three Softball Players Tabbed All-Central Region

Singer adds to her first All-Conference Award with her first All-Region honor.   This spring, she played in all 37 games and started 34.  Singer finished third on the team in batting average at .379 (39-of-103) and was tied for second in doubles with nine.  She also recorded one triple, knocked in 19 runs and scored 11 runs. 

Langland also earns her first All-Region award this season.  She led the team in batting average at .414 (46-of-111), triples (six) and RBI (28).  She was also second on the team in homeruns (three) and runs scored (25).  In addition, Langland ended the year second in stolen bases with 10 (10-of-11 overall).  Defensively, Langland posted a .967 fielding percentage as the team’s starting first baseman recording 223 putouts and 13 assists.

Softball Has Five Selected All-NCAC; Dropsey Repeats as NCAC Player of the Year

CLEVELAND, OHIO  –  Five members of the Hiram College softball team have been selected to the 2010 All-North Coast Athletic Conference Teams that were released today (Friday, May 14) for their efforts this season.  In addition, senior pitcher/outfielder Whitney Dropsey (Ashland/Hillsdale) has been tabbed the NCAC Player of the Year for the second straight year.  [2010 All-NCAC Teams]

Dropsey and freshman designated hitter/first baseman Alee Singer (Akron/Dayton) were both first-team picks.  Junior first baseman Kelly Langland (Batavia/McNicholas) and sophomore outfielder Marlene Smith (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity) were tabbed second-team selections, while junior catcher Jena Ervin (Canfield) earned honorable mention accolades.

Langland returned to the team this season after a year off and capped her comeback season with her first All-NCAC honor.  She led the team in batting average at .414 (46-of-111), triples (six) and RBI (28).  She was also second on the team in homeruns (three) and runs scored (25).  In addition, Langland ended the year second in stolen bases with 10 (10-of-11 overall).  Defensively, Langland posted a .967 fielding percentage as the team’s starting first baseman recording 223 putouts and 13 assists.

Smith earns All-Conference accolades for the first time in her career.  She batted .260 at the plate (26-of-100) with a homerun, three triples, three doubles, 16 runs scored and eight RBI.  Her three triples ranked second most on the team.  Smith had a strong season defensively as the team’s starting center fielder with a .968 fielding percentage and tallying 56 putouts, five assists and comitting just two errors.

Ervin was tabbed honorable mention for the first time and it is also her first All-NCAC selection.  She started all 37 games and ended the 2010 season fourth on the team in batting average at .286 (30-of-105), including leading the team in doubles with 12.  She also hit a homerun, scored 15 runs and had 18 RBI.  As a catcher, Ervin had a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage with 169 putouts and 22 assists.

Softball Eliminated From NCAC Tournament with Loss Against Denison University

GRANVILLE, OHIO  –  The Hiram College softball team was eliminated from the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament with a 2-1 loss against Denison University today (Friday, May 7) in Granville.  [Game Stats]

The Terriers end their season with a 20-17 overall record.  The Big Red improve to 26-15 and will move on to the second day of the tournament tomorrow.

Denison took an early lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning to lead 2-0.  Hiram cut the deficit in half, 2-1, with a run in the fourth on a solo homerun by junior first baseman Kelly Langland (Batavia/McNicholas).  The homerun was Langland’s third of the season.  The run would be the only one of the game for Hiram has Denison hung on for the 2-1 victory and advances to face Ohio Wesleyan for a spot in the tournament championship game tomorrow.

Hiram totaled four hits at the plate and was led by Langland who went one-of-three with a run scored and a RBI.  Senior two-time first-team All-NCAC pitcher/outfielder Whitney Dropsey (Ashland/Hillsdale), junior catcher Jena Ervin (Canfield) and sophomore outfielder Kristen Cooney (North Lewisburg/Triad) also recorded a hit and all finished one-of-three overall.

On the mound, Dropsey pitched the entire game, but would suffer the loss and ends her season with a 14-12 record.  She allowed two runs on eight hits and struck out three batters.

Following the tournament, Langland was named to the NCAC All-Tournament Team.  In two games, Langland batted .333 at the plate (two-of-six) with a homerun, a triple, two runs scored and a RBI.

Softball Defeated by Ohio Wesleyan University in Game One of NCAC Tournament

GRANVILLE, OHIO  –  The Hiram College softball team was defeated by Ohio Wesleyan University, 6-1, today (Friday, May 7) in the first game of the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament hosted by Denison University in Granville.  [Game Stats]

With the loss, the Terriers drop to 20-16 overall and will play in the first elimination game of the tournament later today.   The Battling Bishops improve to 24-13 overall and will take on the winner of the Denison/Wittenberg matchup later this afternoon.

OWU got on the board in the bottom of the first inning on a bases loaded walk to take a 1-0 lead.  Hiram would threaten to tie or take the lead with runners on second and third in the fifth inning, but would not be able to cross home plate.  The Bishops would take advantage by scoring three runs in the bottom of the inning and got some breathing room extending the lead to 4-0.   The Terriers ended the possible shutout in the top of the sixth on a RBI single by junior catcher Jena Ervin (Canfield) making the score 4-1.  OWU answered the Hiram run with two runs of its own in the bottom of the sixth and would go on to the 6-1 final. 

At the plate, Hiram ended the game with five hits with five different Terriers each reaching base safely.  Ervin ended the game one-of-two with a RBI.  Junior first baseman Kelly Langland (Batavia/McNicholas) went one-of-three and scored a run.

On the mound, senior two-time first-team All-NCAC pitcher Whitney Dropsey (Ashland/Hillsdale) pitched got the start, but was given the loss and is now 14-11 overall.  She allowed four runs on four hits hits and struck out four batters in four and two-thirds innings.  Junior Sarah Padilla (Ontario, Calif./Colony) came on in the fifth and pitched the final inning-and-a-third giving up two runs on two hits and tallied one strikeout.

Hiram will play the loser of the Denison/Wittenberg game at 4:30 p.m. this afternoon with the loser of that game being eliminated from the tournament.

Senior Softball Player Whitney Dropsey Repeats as CoSIDA ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District

HIRAM, OHIO  –  Senior softball player and two-time All-North Coast Athletic Conference pitcher/outfielder Whitney Dropsey (Ashland/Hillsdale) has earned first-team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV honors by the College Sports Information Driectors of America (CoSIDA) for the second straight year and it marks her third All-District Award overall.  As a first-team selection, Dropsey becomes eligible for the Academic All-American ballot which will be voted upon at a later date.  [ESPN The Magazine All-District IV Team]

Dropsey is a biology major with a minor in chemistry and currently has a 3.58 grade point average.  She has helped lead Hiram to a 20-15 overall record this season, including leading the Terriers to their third straight NCAC Tournament appearance  in 2010 after capturing the tournament title last season.

Heading into this weekend’s conference tournament, Dropsey leads the team in batting average at .416 (57-of-137) and has scored a team-best 26 runs and stolen a team-high 11 bases (11-of-10 overall).  She is also third in RBI at 20 to go along with two triples and four doubles.  In addition, Dropsey is also the team’s top pitcher with a 1.85 earned run average and a 14-10 record.  She leads the team in every statistical category having made 28 appearances, including 22 starts, with 13 complete games, four shutouts and a save.  In 147-and-a-third innings, Dropsey has struck out 120 batters (17 strikeouts shy of her school record 137 she set in 2009).  Her 1.85 ERA, 120 strikeouts, 28 appearances lead the NCAC while her 14 wins, 147.1 innings pitched and 22 starts are second or tied for second best in the conference.

For her career, Whitney is the most decorated and one of the best players in program history.  She owns or shares nine single-season and career records.  As a pitcher, she owns single-season records for appearances (34), wins (18), innings pitched (182.1), strikeouts (137), fewest walks (13) and is tied for the single-season save record (one).  Whitney currently owns the career record for wins (40) and strikeouts (283).   In addition, she also owns the career record for stolen bases (39). 

She is a two-time first-team All-North Coast Athletic Conference award winner (2008-09), was the 2009 NCAC Player of the Year, first-team Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Central Region (2009) and was a first-team CoSIDA ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honoree in 2009 and a second-team pick in 2008.  Dropsey has earned the NCAA “Toughest to Strikeout” Award on two occassions (2007-08) and is the only Division III player to do so and only the second player at any level (Div. I, II or III) to earn the award.  Coming into this weeked, Dropsey has 507 career at-bats and has recorded one strikeout at the plate. 

Dropsey and the Hiram softball team will travel to Granville for the 2010 NCAC Tournament that begins tomorrow (Friday, May 7).  The Terriers will be the number three seed and will take on the second-seeded Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishops in the first game of the day at 10 a.m.  Denison University repeats as the top seed and will host the two-day event.  For more information about the tournament, please click here

Softball Sweeps Wittenberg University in Regular Season Finale on Senior Day

HIRAM, OHIO  –  The Hiram College softball team swept a pair of key games against Wittenberg University, 6-2 and 4-0, today (Saturday, May 1) in the North Coast Athletic Conference and regular-season finale at Myrtis E. Herndon Field on senior day.  [Game One Stats] [Game Two Stats]

With the sweep, the Terriers improve to 20-15 overall and 9-5 in the NCAC.  The Tigers fall to 17-19 overall and 8-6 NCAC.   This season marks the third time in the past four years that Hiram has reached the 20-win plateau.

In game one, took an early 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning on a RBI sacrifice fly by freshman designated hitter/first baseman Alee Singer (Akron/Dayton).  Wittenberg battled back and tied the game at 1-1 with a run in the top of the second.  Hiram then took control with three runs in the fourth thanks to a two-RBI double by junior first baseman Kelly Langland (Batavia/McNicholas) and a defensive error, making the score 4-1.  The Terriers added two insurance runs in the sixth on another defensive error and a RBI double by Singer to increase the margin to 6-1.  The Tigers crossed the plate once in the top of the seventh, but would not score again as Hiram went to win by the final of 6-2.

Hiram totaled seven hits in game one with three players recording a pair of hits.  Langland and junior catcher Jena Ervin (Canfield) both finished two-of-three with Langland adding a pair of RBI and Ervin tallying a run scored.  Senior two-time All-NCAC pitcher/outfielder Whitney Dropsey (Ashland/Hillsdale) went two-of-four at the plate and scored two runs.

On the mound, Dropsey pitched all seven innings to pick up the win and improve to 14-10 overall.  She allowed two runs on six hits and struck out nine batters.

In game two, the Terriers scored the game’s first run in the bottom of the second on a RBI single by Ervin to take a 1-0 lead.  Hiram added another run in the fourth and two more in the fifth highlighted by a RBI double by Ervin.  Wittenberg was held scoreless as Hiram junior pitcher Sarah Padilla (Ontario, Calif./Colony) pitched six shutout innings en route to the 4-0 victory.

The Hiram bats recorded another strong performance in game two, recording eight hits, and was led by the Trio of Dropsey, Singer and Ervin who all finished with two hits.  Singer and Ervin both finished a perfect two-of-two at the plate with Singer adding a run scored and Ervin driving in two runs.  Dropsey went two-of-four with a run scored. 

Padilla pitched a complete game shutout and earned her fifth win of the season to improve to 5-1 overall.  She gave up no runs on six hits.

Hiram will qualify for the NCAC Tournament for the third straight season and will be the number three seed.  The Terriers are the defending tournament champions and will face second-seeded Ohio Wesleyan University on Friday, May. 7.  Denison University earns the top seed in the tournament and will host the two-day event in Granville.

Softball Loses a Pair of Games Against Denison University

GRANVILLE, OHIO  –  The Hiram College softball team lost a pair of games against Denison University, 5-4 and 2-0, tonight (Friday, Apr. 30) in a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader in Granville.  [Game One Stats] [Game Two Stats]

With the losses, the Terriers are now 18-15 overall and 7-5 in the NCAC.  The Big Red improve to 25-13 overall and 9-3 NCAC.

In game one, Hiram scored the first run of the game in the top of the first inning on a RBI double by freshman designated hitter/first baseman Alee Singer (Akron/Dayton) to give the Terriers an early 1-0 lead.  Denison tied the game with a score in the bottom of the second and took the lead with a three-run third giving the Big Red a 4-1 advantage.  Hiram then got to within a run on a two-RBI single by senior two-time All-NCAC pitcher/outfielder Whitney Dropsey (Ashland/Hillsdale) in the top of the fourth narrowing the gap to 4-3.  But Denison added a run of its own in the bottom half of the inning to increase the margin to 5-3.  The Terriers would make some noise in their final at-bats and would score on a wild pitch with two outs, but would not cross home plate again as Denison hung on for the 5-4 victory.

Hiram would outhit Denison, 12-9, and was led by Dropsey and freshman Megan Troxell (New Richmond) who both finished three-of-four at the plate.  Dropsey would also add two RBI while Troxell had a run scored.  Junior first baseman Kelly Langland (Batavia/McNicholas) added a pair of hits going two-of-four and scored a run.

On the mound, Dropsey pitched the entire game, but suffered the loss and is now 13-9 overall.  She allowed five runs on nine hits and struck out five batters in six innings.

In the nightcap, Denison took an early lead scoring runs in the first and second innings for a 2-0 advantage.  The two scores would prove to be all that the Big Red would need as Hiram tallied four hits in the game, but no runs, and went on to the 2-0 final.

Dropsey was the only Hiram player to record multiple hits finishing two-of-three at the plate. 

Dropsey would also pitch a complete game in the nightcap, but would fall to 13-10 overall for the season after allowing two runs on seven hits and struck out two batters.

Hiram will return to action tomorrow (Saturday, May 1) with a NCAC doubleheader against Wittenberg University in the regular season and home finale at Myrtis E. Herndon Field.  It will also be senior day with the first game scheduled to begin at noon.

Softball Sweeps Oberlin College in NCAC Doubleheader

OBERLIN, OHIO   –  The Hiram College softball team swept Oberlin College, 6-0 and 13-2 in five innings, today (Wednesday, Apr. 28) in a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader at Culhane Field in Oberlin.  [Game One Stats] [Game Two Stats]

With the sweep, the Terriers improve to 18-13 overall and 7-3 in the NCAC.  The Yeowomen fall to 4-30 overall and 1-11 NCAC.

In game one, both teams remained scoreless until the top of the third inning when Hiram tallied four runs that included a two-RBI single by freshman designated hitter/first baseman Alee Singer (Akron/Dayton).  The Terriers added two more runs in the seventh thanks to a two-run homerun by junior first baseman Kelly Langland (Batavia/McNicholas), her second homerun of the season, to increase the lead to 6-0.  Solid team defense and pitching by senior two-time All-NCAC pitcher/outfielder Whitney Dropsey (Ashland/Hillsdale) held Oberlin scoreless throughout as Hiram went on to win by the final of 6-0.

Hiram had 11 hits in the opening game and was led by Langland who went two-of-three with two runs scored and three RBI.  Three other Terriers each recorded a pair of hits.  Singer finished the game two-of-four with two RBI.  Sophomore outfielder Marlene Smith (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity) went two-of-three and aadded a run scored.  Freshman shortstop Megan Troxell (New Richmond) finished two-of-three.

Dropsey pitched all seven innings to pick up her 12th win of the season to improve to 12-8 overall.  She also claimed her fourth shutout victory of the season allowing just four hits and striking out nine batters.

In game two, Hiram grabbed an early 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the first on a RBI single by Singer.  The Terriers added two more runs in the third thanks to another RBI single by Singer and a RBI single by sophomore third baseman Ashley Pike (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) to lead 3-0.  Oberlin got on the board with a run in the bottom of the third, but Hiram blew the game open with 10 runs in the fourth resulting in a commanding 13-1 margin.  The Yeowomen scored a run in the fourth, but would not cross home plate again as Hiram went on to cruise to a 13-2 victory in five innings.

Hiram finished game two with 14 hits and was led by senior second baseman Ashley Crowder (North Lewisburg/Triad) and Singer who were two of four Terriers with a pair of hits.  Crowder went two-of-three at the plate with two runs scored.  Singer finished two-of-three with a run scored and two RBI.  Pike ended the game two-of-three with a run scored and a RBI.  Troxell rounded out the multi-hit performances going two-of-two with a run scored.

On the hill, Dropsey started the game and went three innings to claim the victory and improve to 13-8 overall.   She allowed just one run on four hits and had two strikeouts.  Junior Sarah Padilla (Ontario, Calif./Colony) and sophomore Alati Gagne (Gorham, N.H./Gorham) each pitched an inning of relief.  Padilla gave of one run on two hits while striking out one batter.  Gagne allowed no runs and just one hit.

Hiram will play a pivotal NCAC doubleheader on Friday, Apr. 30 against Denison University in Granville.  The first game is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.

Softball Defeats Baldwin-Wallace College in Non-Conference Single Game

HIRAM, OHIO  –  The Hiram College softball team defeated Baldwin-Wallace College, 5-4, today (Friday, Apr. 23) in a non-conference single game at Myrtis E. Herndon Field.  [Game Stats]

With the win, the Terriers improve to 16-13 overall, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 19-15 overall for the season.

Hiram grabbed an early lead, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning on a RBI triple by junior first baseman Kelly Langland (Batavia/McNicholas) and a RBI groundout by freshman designated player/first baseman Alee Singer (Akron/Dayton).  B-W then scored four unanswered runs with a pair in the second and two more in the third to take a 4-2 advantage.  The Terriers evened the score at 4-4 with two runs in the bottom of the third thanks to two-RBI single by Singer.  The score remained tied until the bottom of the sixth when Hiram sophomore outfielder Kristen Cooney (North Lewisburg/Triad) knocked home what turned out to be the game-winning run, that was set-up by a triple by sophomore outfielder Marlene Smith (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity) earlier in the inning.  Senior two-time All-North Coast Athletic Conference pitcher/outfielder Whitney Dropsey (Ashland/Hillsdale) closed out the game on the mound as Hiram went on to win by the final of 5-4.

Hiram tallied nine hits in the game and was led offensively by Singer who finished two-of-three with three RBI.  Cooney also posted a two-for-three performance at the plate to go along with a run scored and a RBI.  Five other Terriers would also record a base hit in the win.

On the mound, freshman Sarah Bogdan (Strongsville) got the start and pitched three innings allowing four ones on eight hits, while striking out one batter.  Junior Sarah Padilla (Ontario, Calif./Colony) also pitched three innings and would be credited with the win, improving her to 4-1 for the season.  She allowed no runs or hits and had one strikeout.  Dropsey came on to pitch the seventh inning and claimed her first save of the season after giving up no runs or hits and struck out one batter.

Hiram is scheduled to play a non-conference doubleheader against Thiel (Pa.) College on Monday, Apr. 26 in Greenville, Pa.  The first game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
