February 26, 2008
The Hiram College spring sport season edged one step closer to officially beginning as the Terrier softball team was selected to finish fourth and the baseball team ninth in the North Coast Athletic Conference preseason polls that were released earlier today (Monday, Feb. 25).
The Hiram softball team received 45 points to rank fourth of eight teams. Allegheny (Pa.) College was picked as the preseason favorite with 59 points and four first-place votes. Wittenberg University was second with 54 points and two first-place votes while defending NCAC Tournament Champion Denison University was predicted to finish third tallying 49 points and two first-place votes.
The Terriers return all but one starter from last year’s team that posted a school single-season record 22 games and finished 22-14 overall. It marked the first winning season since 1989 when Hiram recorded a 14-8 record. Hiram also made its first-ever appearance in the NCAC Tournament.
In 2008, Hiram will led by a trio of seniors including two-time All-NCAC catcher Mindy Miller (Navarre/Waynedale), pitcher/first baseman Jamie Brown (Louisville) and outfielder Rachel Unsinger (Dorset/Jefferson Area). The Terriers will have a strong supporting cast led by juniors and All-NCAC first baseman Chastine Romanello (Phoenix, Ariz./Barry Goldwater), All-NCAC outfielder Megan Samuel (Olmsted Falls) and All-NCAC shortstop Stephanie Zunic (Canfield). Other returning starters include junior second baseman Rosie Frank (Strongsville/Parma Hts.Holy Name) and sophomore outfielder Whitney Dropsey (Ashland/Hillsdale),

Also returning is junior All-NCAC outfielder Craig Dobs (Warren/Howland), senior first baseman Kris Immel (Wooster) and junior outfielder Mark Reifsnyder (Tallmadge).
Hiram will not be without its share of youth this season as 16 of the 25-man roster are freshmen or sophomores.

Hiram College hosts Lectures in Religion February 11-12
February 23, 2008
Philip Clayton, Ingraham Professor of Theology at the Claremont School of Theology and Professor of Philosophy and Religion at the Claremont Graduate University, will serve as the speaker for the Lectures in Religion scheduled for February 11 and 12, 2008. His theme is “Why the ‘New Atheism’ Isn’t New: The Path from Scientific Reductionism to Reenchantment.”
Clayton’s scholarship focuses on the intersection of science and religion. His approach mixes the disciplines of science, philosophy, theology, and comparative religions to address the ethical, cultural, and political issues that stem from opposing perspectives among those disciplines. He works to show the compatibility of science with religion where those fields can be integrated.
Clayton earned a joint PhD from the Departments of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Yale University. His books include Mind and Emergence and God and Contemporary Science.
The Lectures in Religion series begins on February 11 at 7:30 PM when Clayton presents “Dawkins’ ‘God Delusion’ and Other Things that Science Doesn’t Prove.” Two lectures follow on February 12: “Deeper Challenges: How to Respond to Broad Naturalism and Spirituality without Belief” at 12:30 PM, and “Process, Emergence, and Panentheism: Christianity for a Scientific Age” at 2:45 PM.
All events are free and open to the public. Lectures will be held in Hiram’s Kennedy Center Ballroom, State Route 700 in Hiram. For more information, please call Professor of Religious Studies Jon Moody at 330-569-5147.
