Men’s Soccer Defeats Marietta College in Overtime; Terriers Have Won Five Straight

HIRAM, OHIO – The Hiram College men’s soccer team recorded its fifth straight victory with a 4-3 overtime win against Marietta College today (Tuesday, Sept. 30) in a non-conference match at the Hiram Soccer Complex. [Game Stats]
With the win, the Terriers improve to 8-2 overall while the Pioneers fall to 5-2-2 for the season.
In the first half, Marietta tallied the only goal of the period on a penalty kick at the 6:17 minute mark and took a 1-0 lead heading into the locker rooms.
Hiram tied the score at 1-1 just over a minute into the second half off the foot of sophomore Evan Roberts (Akron/Ellet) with assists from junior defenseman/forward Jamie Ganner (Eastlake/North) and sophomore Petar Knezevic (Akron/Ellet) at the 46:32 minute mark. Marietta regained the lead with an unassisted goal during the 56th minute to make the score 2-1. The Terriers answered scoring two unanswered goals from Ganner at the 56:07 minute mark and senior two-time All-NCAC midfielder Kelsey Resnick (Hudson) during the 75th minute giving Hiram a 3-2 advantage. The game would then be stopped by lighting and after a 40-minute delay, the Pioneers knotted the game at 3-3 on a penalty kick during the 89th minute sending the game into overtime.
In the first overtime period, Hiram tallied the game-winning goal during the 94th minute on a penalty kick by junior midfielder Matt Urban (Hudson) securing a 4-3 victory and a fifth consecutive win for the Terriers.
Hiram will look to keep the momentum going when it hosts Ohio Wesleyan University on Saturday, Oct. 4 in a North Coast Athletic Conference game at the Hiram Soccer Complex. The game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.

Women’s Golf Finishes Fourth at JCU Fall Invitational; Khowcharoen Earns Medalist Honors

CHESTERLAND, OHIO – Freshman Kristinee Khowcharoen (Muang, Phitsanulok, Thailand/Fryeburg Acad., Maine) shot a tournament total 211 strokes to win medalist honors as the Hiram College women’s golf team made its return with a fourth place finish at the John Carroll Fall Invitational this weekend (Friday-Saturday, Sept. 26-27) at Fowler’s Mill Golf Course in Chesterland. As a team, the Terriers shot a combined 941 strokes (471+470=941) to place fourth overall. Mercyhurst (Pa.) College won the event with 715 strokes (362+353=715). Host school John Carroll was second at 750 strokes (377+373=750) and Mount Union College was third at 809 strokes (416+393=809).
Individually, Hiram was led by Khowcharoen’s 211 after firing a 128 (43+43+42=128) in the first round which consisted of 27 holes and followed that up with the round of the day on Saturday with an 83 (42+41=83). Khowcharoen led the entire field after the first round by two strokes and bested the field by three strokes on the final day to capture medalist honors by a total of five strokes.
Freshman Shannon Kowalski (Tallmadge) was second on the team with a two-day total 316 (193+123=316) and freshman Amelia Mounts (Strongsville/Padua) was third with 318 strokes (191+127=318). Freshman Alex Hardin (Marysville/Hilliard Darby) finished the tournament with 728 strokes (191+137=328) to place fourth on the team and sophomore Heather Brown (Alger/Upper Scioto Valley) rounded out the Hiram competitors with 370 strokes (219+151=370).
Hiram will play in a dual match on Friday, Oct. 24 against Ursuline College in its final match of the 2008 fall season. The first group will tee-off at 2:00 p.m. at Sugar Bush Golf Course in Garrettsville.

Lindsay-Crane Center welcomes Michael Chasar

The Lindsay-Crane Center for Writing and Literature hosts Vachel Lindsay scholar Michael Chasar for a convocation at 12 p.m. on Thursday, October 2, 2008. The convocation is in the Pritchard Room on the second floor of the library and is open to the public.
Chasar will talk about poet and artist Lindsay, a student at Hiram at the end of the nineteenth century, focusing is remarks on Lindsay’s pioneering effort to introduce the concept of the “visiting poet” in universities. Chasar is currently a visiting assistant professor of English at the University of Iowa, and has a Ph.D. in English and a certificate in Book Studies from the University of Iowa. His dissertation, “Everyday Reading: U.S. Poetry and Popular Culture 1880-1945,” received first prize in the 2007 “Distinguished Dissertation” award competition sponsored by the Council of Graduate Schools and University Microfilms Dissertation Publishing. Chasar’s essays and articles on poetry and culture have been accepted by publications such as “American Literature” and “Writer’s Chronicle.”
Brain Evolution presentation to be held Wednesday

Dr. Mary Ann Raghanti of the Department of Anthropology at Kent State University will be speaking on “Brain Evolution As Revealed By Comparative Neuroanatomy” on Wednesday, October 1, at 4:30 p.m. in the Library Instruction Room on the third floor.
What about our human brains gives us the capacity to reason, appreciate music, art, and build complex machinery? Raghanti will speak about the similarities and differences between human brains and the brains of primates and other animals. She will present evidence for a reorganization of cells within the cerebral cortex that may contribute to humans’ increased capacity for cognitive and behavioral flexibility, characteristics that similar creatures do not possess.
Come be enlightened and entertained. Refreshments will be served and all are welcome.
Men’s Golf Finishes Eighth at Oberlin College Invitational

OBERLIN, OHIO – The Hiram College men’s golf team placed eighth out of eight teams after the final day of the Oberlin College Invitational today (Sunday, Sept. 28) at the Oberlin Country Club in Oberlin.
Hiram shot a second round team score of 360 on the final day and ended the two-day tournament with a combined score of 709 strokes (349+360=709). Ohio Wesleyan University came in first in the overall team standings with 581 strokes (287+294=581). Wittenberg University was second at 607 (305+302=607) strokes followed by Allegheny (Pa.) College in third with 608 strokes (306+302=608).
Individually, Hiram was led by senior Brian Wilthew (Garrettsville/Garfield) who carded a second straight 85 to end the tournament with 170 strokes (85+85=170) on the par-72, 6,880-yard course layout. Sophomore Andy Deehr (Cortland/Champion) was second with a two-day total 175 strokes (86+89=175). Freshman Bob Ritchie (Strongsville/Brunswick) and fellow freshman Andrew Chinworth (North Manchester, Ind./Manchester) tied for third on the team at 182 strokes. Ritchie posted scores of 88 and 94 while Chinworth recorded rounds of 90 and 92. Sophomore Doug Stark (Winder, Ga./Winderbarrow) rounded out the Hiram competitors with a 92 on the final day and finishing the tournament with 198 strokes (101+97=198).
Hiram concluded its 2008 fall schedule with the Oberlin Invitational. The Terriers will be off until Mar. 9 when they make their annual spring break trip to Pinehurst, N.C. and will play a dual match against Mount Union College.

Men’s Soccer Win Streak Grows to Four Games with Win Against Oberlin College

OBERLIN, OHIO – The Hiram College men’s soccer team increased its current win streak to four games with a 2-1 victory against Oberlin College today (Saturday, Sept. 27) in the North Coast Athletic Conference opener in Oberlin. [Game Stats]
The Terriers improve to 7-2 overall with today’s victory and 1-0 in the NCAC. The Yeomen fall to 6-4 overall and 0-1 for the season.
Oberlin outshot Hiram, 5-2, in the first period, but neither team could get a shot past either goaltender resulting in a 0-0 tie at the intermission.
Just over a minute-and-a-half into the second half, Oberlin got on the board with a goal at the 46:27 minute mark giving the Yeomen a 1-0 lead. Hiram answered by scoring two unanswered goals beginning with a goal by sophomore forward Petar Knezevic, his sixth of the season, during the 56th minute to tie the game at 1-1. Senior midfielder Kelsey Resnick (Hudson) was credited with the assist on the Knezevic goal. Just past the halfway point of the half, the Terriers took the lead thanks to a goal by sophomore forward Cole Miller (Berlin/Hiland), with an assist from junior midfielder David Krems (Lakewood) at the 68:28 minute mark. Miller’s goal would turn out to be the game winner as the Terriers went to win by the final of 2-1.
Senior Nate Rausch (Cuyahoga Falls) played the entire game in goal for Hiram and got his sixth win of the season and is now 6-1 overall. In 90 minutes, Rausch allowed one goal and made two saves.
Hiram will look to keep the momentum going when it hosts Marietta College in a non-conference game on Tuesday, Sept. 30 in a non-conference game at the Hiram Soccer Complex. The game is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.

Volleyball Sweeps a Pair of Games at Ohio Wesleyan Tri-Match

DELAWARE, OHIO – The Hiram College volleyball team posted a pair of victories against Ohio Wesleyan University in a North Coast Athletic Conference match and non-conference foe Otterbein College this afternoon (Saturday, Sept. 27) in a tri-match hosted by OWU in Delaware.
The Terriers have now won their last five straight matches and move above the .500 mark with a 9-8 overall record. Hiram also remains perfect in conference play improving to 4-0 for the season.
Against OWU, the match remained close throughout with Hiram capturing the first set by the final of 25-21. The Battling Bishops evened the match by winning an extended second set, 30-28. The Terriers took control of the match in the third and fourth sets winning by the scores of 25-13 and 25-10 to take a 3-1 overall match victory and remain perfect in NCAC play.
In the match against Otterbein, Hiram continued its momentum from the earlier match winning the first set, 25-17. The Cardinals would make the second set interesting, but it would be the Terriers who prevailed by the final mark of 26-24. Hiram then clinched the match by winning the third and final set, 25-12, for a 3-0 match victory.
Hiram will seek a possible sixth straight victory on Wednesday, Oct. 1 when it travels to Meadville, Pa. for a NCAC contest against Allegheny College. The match is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.

Football Defeated by Carnegie Mellon (Pa.)

PITTSBURGH, PA. – The Hiram College football team was defeated by Carnegie Mellon University, 41-6, this afternoon (Saturday, Sept. 27) in a non-conference game in Pittsburgh, Pa. [Game Stats]
With the loss, the Terriers are now 2-1 overall while the Tartens improve to 2-2 for the season.
CMU got off to a quick start returning the opening kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown to begin the game and take an early 7-0 lead and led by the same score after the first quarter of play.
The Tartens added to their lead in the second quarter thanks to a 12-yard TD run that was set up by a Hiram fumble at the 13:25 minute mark increasing the lead to two scores, 14-0. CMU added a pair of field goals later in the period including a 34-yard kick that capped a 16-play 77-yard drive and a 23-yarder to end the half resulting in a 20-0 Hiram deficit.
CMU tallied the only points of the third quarter on a 27-yard TD pass with 9:35 remaining on the clock making the score 27-0 heading into the fourth quarter.
Hiram’s lone score occurred in the final period on a two-yard TD run by junior wide receiver/quarterback Matt Wilson (Ashtabula/Edgewood) with 6:46 to play in the game. The extra point try was missed. But it would not be enough as CMU recorded two scores in the quarter with a pair of one-yard TD runs en route to the 41-6 final.
The Tartens were led offensively by Anthony Ruzga who rushed for a game-high 96 yards on 24 carries and one TD. Quarterback Phil Pantalone completed three-of-14 passes for 106 yards and a score. Defensively, Chris Luther recorded a team-best eight total tackles (four solo and four asssists) including two tackles for loss.
Hiram was led by senior two-time All-North Coast Athletic Conference quarterback Trevor Henderson (Rural Valley, Pa./West Shamokin) who completed 13-of-18 passes for 83 yards, but had one interception. Senior running back Eddie Cloud (Bedford Heights/Warrensville Heights) led the Terriers rushers with 42 yards on two carries. Freshman wideout Daniel Rosenberger (Niles/McKinley) recorded game highs in receptions (five) and yards (64). Defensively, sophomore defensive back Nick Haigh (Wadsworth/Cloverleaf) and senior linebacker Alex Ream (Parma Heights/Holy Name) each tallied 12 tackles. Freshman linebacker Jon Hull (Buford, Ga./Mill Creek) added 11 tackles.
Hiram returns to action next Saturday (Oct. 4) when it hosts Wittenberg University in the home and NCAC opener at the Charles A. Henry Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Volleyball Remains Unbeaten in Conference Play with Win Against Denison University

GRANVILLE, OHIO – The Hiram College volleyball team posted a three-set victory against Denison University tonight (Friday, Sept. 26) in a North Coast Athletic Conference match in Granville.
With the win, the Terriers improve to 7-8 overall and remain undefeated in NCAC play at a perfect 3-0. The Big Red falls to 3-8 overall and 0-1 NCAC.
Hiram began the match with a strong 25-16 victory in the first set to capture a quick 1-0 lead. The Terriers went on to win the next two sets by identical 25-21 marks to claim a 3-0 overall match victory.
Hiram will travel to Delaware for a tri-match hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University. The Terriers will look for four straight conference wins when they take on the Battling Bishops at 1 p.m. followed by a non-conference match against Otterbein College at 3 p.m.

“Flicks with Friends” continues with Italian film

“Days and Clouds,” an Italian film directed by Silvio Soldini, will be the next film in the “Flicks with Friends: The Friends of the Library Film Festival” series. It will be shown at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 1, in the Pritchard Room of the library. Admission is free.
