Women’s Basketball Defeated by Mount Union College

HIRAM, OHIO — The Hiram College women’s basketball team was defeated by Mount Union College, 75-46, tonight (Tuesday, Dec. 30) in a non-conference game at Price Gymnasium. [Game Stats]

With the loss, the Terriers drop to 2-6 overall while the Purple Raiders improve to 7-2 overall for the season.

Both teams exchanged leads in the opening minutes of the first half and the game would be tied at 12-12 with 13:34 to play in the period. Mount Union then began to pull away thanks to a 22-4 scoring run to reach its largest lead of the half of 18 points, 34-16, at the 2:17 minute mark. Sophomore forward Caitlyn Ruese (Strongsville) added a pair of free-throws and junior forward Ashley Drum (Parma/Valley Forge) scored on a jumper to end the Hiram scoring to trail 35-20 at halftime.

Hiram cut the lead to 13 points on two occassions in the second half with the last one being, 50-37, with 11:09 to go on a three-pointer by sophomore guard Jess Cowan (Hiram/Crestwood). The Purple Raiders then took control of the game, outscoring Hiram, 23-6, to record their largest lead of the contest, 73-43, at the 2:23 mark en route to the 75-46 victory.

Mount Union had two players score in double figures led by Tessa Pohovey with a game-high 13 points on five-of-10 shooting (50.0 percent) and grabbed a game-tying best nine rebounds. Katie Crider was the only other Purple Raider to score in double digits with 12 points. Stephanie Scwartz also pulled down nine boards for Mount Union.

Hiram was led by freshman guard Kelsey Durichko (Brunswick) and Ruese with nine points each. Ruese also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

Hiram will look to end its four-game winless skid on Friday (Jan. 2) when it resumes its North Coast Athletic Conference schedule against Wittenberg University at Price Gym as part of a basketball doubleheader with the Terrier men’s team. The women will host the Tigers at 6 p.m. and the men will host Wabash (Ind.) College at 8 p.m.

Men’s Basketball Falls Short of Guilford (N.C.) College

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Sophomore guard Chris Roberts (Cleveland/Kennedy) fell three assists shy of recording a triple double, scoring 17 points, grabbing 11 rebounds and dishing out seven helpers, but it would not be enough as the Hiram College men’s basketball team fell short of Guilford College, 73-70, tonight (Monday, Dec. 29) in a non-conference game at Ragan-Brown Field House in Greensboro, N.C. Following tonight’s loss, the Terriers fall to 6-4 overall while the Quakers improve to 7-2 overall for the season.

The game remained close throughout the opening minutes of the first half as Hiram stayed within striking distance and trailed by just a basket, 19-17, with 9:54 left before the break. Guilford then went on a 12-4 scoring run to extend its lead to its largest of the half, 31-21, at the 5:54 minute mark. The Terriers rallied with a 10-3 run of its own to make it a one possession game on a three-pointer by Roberts making the score 34-31 with 1:47 to go in the period. Guilford looked to be headed to the locker room with a sizeable seven-point advantage, but a late triple by sophomore point guard Nick Russo (Strongsville/Bedford Chanel) closed the gap to 41-37 at halftime.

Neither team found the bottom of the net during the first 2:48 of the second half when Hiram sophomore guard Deon Milton (Oxon Hill, Md./Seed Charter) ended the drought by connecting on a three-pointer to cut the lead to 41-40 at the 17:12 mark. Hiram later took the lead with a series of three straight tres with two from freshman guard Andrew Wiegand (Amherst/Firelands) and one from sophomore guard Glenn Campbell (Copley/Buchtel) giving the Terriers a three-point edge, 49-46, with 13:44 to go. The Quakers eventually regained the lead and led by six points, 67-61, with 4:55 to play. Hiram hung around and found itself down by a point, 71-70, thanks to another three-pointer by Wiegand with 14 seconds remaining. Guilford connected on two-of-four free-throws down the stretch and held the Terriers scoreless in the final seconds to hang to a 73-70 victory.

Guilford had three players score in double figures with Clay Henson leading the way with a game-high 19 points on six-of-14 shooting (42.9 percent), including making three triples. George Neville was second with 18 points and Rhett Bonner was third with 14 points. Tyler Sanborn contributed with a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with seven points.

In addition to Roberts’ 17 points, 11 boards and seven assists, Wiegand also scored 17 points to tie for the team-high, including shooting an impressive five-of-nine (55.6 percent) from behind the arc. Two other Terriers scored in double digits with Milton finishing the game with 14 points and Campbell adding 10 points. Milton also had a strong performance from three-point range shooting four-of-nine (44.4 percent).

Hiram will return home and resume its North Coast Athletic Conference schedule on Friday, Jan. 2 when it hosts Wabash (Ind.) College at Price Gymnasium as part of a basketball doubleheader with the Terrier women’s basketball team. The women will host Wittenberg at 6 p.m. followed by the men at 8 p.m.

Men’s Basketball Has Three-Game Winning Streak Snapped by Greensboro (N.C.) College in Overtime

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Hiram College men’s basketball team lost a close game against non-conference opponent Greensboro College in overtime, 71-68, ending a three-game winning streak today (Sunday, Dec. 28) in Greensboro, N.C. [Game Stats].

Following today’s loss, the Terriers are now 6-3 overall while the Pride improves to 4-4 overall for the season.

The first half featured a seesaw battle between the two teams with four ties and five lead changes. Greensboro maintained a lead for the majority of the first half with its largest margin of the period being five points on two occassions with the last one coming at the 10:10 minute mark by the score of 16-11. Hiram then regained the lead on a jumper by sophomore guard Chris Roberts (Cleveland/Kennedy) with 6:01 remaining before the half as the Terriers outscored the Pride, 19-7, to end the period. The Terriers held Greensboro scoreless in the final 2:19 to lead 30-23 at the break.

In the second half, Hiram led by as many as seven points, 33-26, thanks to a three-point play by Roberts at the 18:41 mark. Greensboro rallied by scoring seven unanswered points to the tie the game at 33-33 with 14:52 to go. Neither team would find itself trailing by more than four points during the remainder of the game and a late basket by Greensboro with 1:30 to play gave the Pride a 55-53 advantage. Sophomore guard Glenn Campbell (Copley/Buchtel) tallied the equilizer with just under a minute to go to tie the game at 55-55. Greensboro took the final shot of the game, but could not hit its mark, sending the game into overtime.

Greensboro looked to take control early scoring the first seven points of the overtime period for a 62-55 advantage with 2:49 left. Hiram battled back to get to within three points on multiple occassions, including on a bucket by Campbell with 1:44 to play, cutting the deficit to 66-63. But four straight points by the Pride extended their lead back to seven points and sealed the victory despite a three-pointer by Campbell to end the game with the final of 71-68.

Greensboro had four players score in double figures led by Anthony Simmons with 21 points on seven-of-16 shooting (43.8 percent), including shooting an impressive six-of-13 (46.2 percent) from three-point range. Michael Mitchell was second with 15 points, followed by Michael McDuffie with 12 points. Lewis Owenby rounded out the Pride high scorers with 10 points.

Hiram was led by Roberts with a game-high 23 points on nine-of-17 shooting (52.9 percent). He also grabbed a game-tying high seven rebounds. Campbell was the only other Terrier in double figures with 11 points to go along with seven boards. He also tallied a team-best four assists.

Hiram returns to action tomorrow (Monday, Dec. 29) against Guilford College in a non-conference game in Greensboro, N.C. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.

OfficeMax Names Tony Giuliano as VP

Tony Giuliano ’80 has been named vice president, treasurer and investor relations of OfficeMax Incorporated (NYSE: OMX), Naperville, Ill. Giuliano will oversee treasury and risk management activities as well as investor relations for the company.

He brings more than 20 years of corporate finance experience to his new position. Previously, he was treasurer with ACCO Brands Corporation (“ACCO”), and has held senior level treasury, investor relations, and financial planning positions with GBC and Montgomery Ward.

Giuliano majored in economics and mathematics at Hiram, and earned an M.B.A. from the University of Michigan.
