Men’s Basketball Sweeps Season Series With Win Against Wittenberg University; Terriers Move Into Sole Possession of First Place in NCAC Standings

SPRINGFIELD, OHIO — The Hiram College men’s basketball team swept the two-game season series against Wittenberg University with a 79-75 victory this afternoon (Saturday, Jan. 31) in a North Coast Athletic Confernece game at Pam Evans Smith Arena in Springfield. [Game Stats]
With the win, the Terrier win streak grows to a season-best five games and are now 14-5 overall and 9-1 in the NCAC. Hiram has also won eight of its last nine games. In addition, the win against Wittenberg puts the Terriers in sole possession of first place in the conference standings thanks to an Ohio Wesleyan University upset of The College of Wooster earlier in the afternoon. The Tigers are now 9-9 overall and 6-4 NCAC.
Both teams exchanged leads in the early minutes of the first half. Hiram regained the lead at the 15:05 mark thanks to a jumper by senior forward Ian Pfouts (Uniontown/Green) giving the Terriers an 11-10 advantage and never trailed in the game again. Hiram extended its lead to as many as nine points, 31-22, on a triple by Pfouts as part of small 5-0 scoring run with 6:12 to go in the period. Wittenberg rallied to tie the game at 33-33 with 3:42 left before halftime, but the Terriers answered with six straight points capped by a pair of free-throws by freshman guard Andrew Wiegand (Amherst/Firelands) making the score 39-33. The Tigers again rallied with four consecutive points of their own to cut the deficit to 39-37 at the intermission.
Wittenberg tied the game at 39-39 by scoring the first points of the second half and stayed within striking distance throughout the first half of the final period, but could not take over the lead. Hiram began to pull away in the final 10 minutes recording its largest lead of the game of 12 points, 70-58, at the 5:42 mark with another triple by Pfouts. Wittenberg would not go quietly as the Tigers narrowed the gap to a single point on two occassions, including a 76-75 deficit with 18 seconds to go. Hiram connected on three-of-four free-throws in the final seconds to secure a 79-75 win and sweep both regular-season matchups between the two schools.
Both teams shot well from the floor with Wittenberg converting 44.3 percent (27-of-61) of its attempts to Hiram’s 46.4 percent (26-of-56) shooting. Both teams also made 10 three-pointers in the game, but the Terriers won the battle on the boards, out-rebounding the Tigers, 41-30.
Wittenberg was led in scoring by Kevin Murray with 15 points on five-of-14 shooting (35.7 percent). Josh McKee was second with 12 points and grabbed a team-tying high seven rebounds. David Nowicki and Mark Snyder rounded out the Tiger high-scorers with 10 points each.
Hiram was led by Pfouts with a game-high 19 points on seven-of-11 shooting (63.6 percent), including three-of-four (75.0 percent) from behind the arc. Wiegand was second with a season-tying high 17 points. Sophomore guard Chris Roberts (Cleveland/Kennedy) rounded out the Hiram point leaders with 13 points to go along with seven boards. Sophomore forward Babajide Eniola (Washington, D.C./Seed Charter) tallied a game-high nine rebounds and scored nine points.
Hiram will look to put more distance between itself and the rest of the NCAC when the Terriers host Wooster on Wednesday, Feb. 4 in a key conference matchup at Price Gymnasium. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Swimming and Diving Teams Defeated by Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) College in Regular-Season Finale

HIRAM, OHIO — The Hiram College swimming and diving teams were defeated by Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) College this afternoon (Saturday, Jan. 31) in a non-conference dual meet in the regular-season finale and Senior Day at Alumni Memorial Pool. The Terrier women lost, 150-93, and the men lost, 78-64. Following today’s meet, the women end the regular season with a 3-8 overall record in dual meet competition and the men finish with a 3-7 overall record.
Individually for the women, the Terriers had four event winners led by senior Amy Kocka (Strongsville) who captured two events with top times in the 200-meter freestyle (2:18.17) and the 400-meter free (4:52.88). Joining Kocka to post winning marks was sophomore Claire Rachek (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) in the 800-meter free (10:44.96) and junior Katie Pierdomenico (Stow/Twinsburg) in the 100-meter free (1:03.92). The women also had a winning relay team with junior Gillian Millwood (Kingston, Jamaica/Campion College), senior Shalynn Twining (Wapakoneta), freshman Becca Szanto (Bainbridge) and Kocka combining to win the 200-meter free relay with a time of 1:59.91.
The men also had four individual event winners led by sophomore Travis Subda (Spring, Texas/Klein Collins) who won two events in the 100-meter free (54.60 seconds) and the 200-meter breaststroke (2:33.15). Also touching the wall first for the men was junior Ben Adams (Lakewood, Colo./Wheat Ridge) in the 200-meter individual medley (2:40.68) and sophomore Adam Roark (Elyria/Catholic) in the 200-meter backstroke (2:34.47). Roark, sophomore Zach Wegman (Knoxville, Tenn./Bereon), sophomore Colin Kelly (Perrysburg) and sophomore Jim Griesmer (Chesterland/University School) combined efforts to win the 200-meter free relay with a mark of 1:48.07.
The Hiram swim teams will now prepare for the annual North Coast Athletic Conference Championships that begin on Thursday, Feb. 12 at the C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton. The College of Wooster will serve as the host school with the first event beginning on Thursday at 10 a.m.

Women’s Basketball Defeated by Denison University

HIRAM, OHIO — Sophomore guard Jess Cowan (Hiram/Crestwood) scored a career-high 16 points, but it would not be enough as the Hiram College women’s basketball team was defeated by Denison University, 83-64, this afternoon (Saturday, Jan. 31) in a North Coast Athletic Conference game at Price Gymnasium. With the loss, the Terriers drop to 5-13 overall and 3-6 in the NCAC. The Big Red improve to 12-6 overall and 10-0 NCAC.
Denison led by six points, 17-11, near the midway point of the first half, but Hiram then responded by outscoring the Big Red, 17-9, giving the Terriers a 28-23 lead at the 7:46 mark. Hiram maintained a slight edge, 38-36, with 3:41 to play in the period thanks to a layup by Cowan. Denison ended the half with an 8-0 scoring run to regain the lead and take a 46-38 margin at the break.
Denison scored the first points of the second half to extend its lead to double figures for the first time in the game, 48-38, and pulled away leading by as many as 25 points, 79-54, at the 4:47 mark en route to the 83-64 final.
The Big Red had three players score in double digits led by Carolyn Simpson with a game-high 22 points on eight-of-14 shooting (57.1 percent). She aslo grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Shaina Kaiser was second with 14 points and Sarah Perrine added 12 points.
Hiram was led by Cowans’ 16 points on five-of-nine shooting (55.6 percent) from the field, including three-of-six (50.0 percent) from three-point range. Junior forward Ashley Drum (Parma/Valley Forge) was the only other Terrier in double figures with 12 points. Fellow junior forward Alex Dellas (Willoughby Hills/South) followed up a career-high game in rebonds earlier in the week with a game-high nine boards against Denison.
Hiram will begin a three-game road trip starting with a NCAC matchup against Allegheny College on Tuesday, Feb. 3 in Meadville, Pa. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.

Instrumental Music/Music Education Coordinator candidate rehearsal

On Tuesday, February 3, Dr. Carly Johnson, the first candidate for Instrumental Music/Music Education Coordinator position will be directing an open rehearsal with the Concert Band followed by a free discussion. The event will begin at 4:15 p.m. and last until 5:30 p.m. in Frohring Recital Hall.
The campus community is invited and the event is free and open to the public.
Johnson is currently an assistant professor of music at Alabama State University.
She holds a D.M.A. (Doctor of Musical Arts) in Trumpet Performance & Literature from the Ohio State University; an M.M. in Trumpet Performance from the University of Florida in Gainesville; and a B.M. in Music Education from Dana School of Music at Youngstown State University.
Three from Hiram attend Joint Mathematics Meetings

Professor of Mathematics Jimmy Buchanan, Assistant Professor of Mathematics Elizabeth Zollinger, and senior mathematics major Taiji Tsutsui recently attended the Joint Mathematics Meetings on January 5 through 8 in Washington, D.C.
Tsutsui gave a talk entitled “The Minimum Semidefinite Rank of a Graph,” which described the results of research that he conducted during the summer of 2008 while participating in a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) at Central Michigan University.
Zollinger presented a poster and gave a talk entitled “A Family of Orbits in the Newtonian Three-Body Problem.”
Buchanan, who chairs the Mathematical Association of America’s Committee On Minicourses, was one of the meeting organizers and arranged for 14 four-hour minicourses to be offered during the meeting.
With over 6000 mathematicians in attendance, the Joint Mathematics Meetings is the largest and most important mathematics meeting of the year. This year’s meeting included the 115th annual meeting of the American Mathematical Society and the 92nd annual meeting of the Mathematical Association of America.
According to the AMS website, “The Joint Mathematics Meetings are held for the purpose of advancing mathematical achievement, encouraging research, and to provide the communication necessary to progress in the field. These meetings serve to preserve, supplement, and utilize the results of the research of mathematicians the world over. Keeping abreast of the progress in mathematics results in the furtherance of the interest of mathematical scholarship and research.”
Women’s Basketball Alumni Day Recap

HIRAM, OHIO — On Saturday, January 24, the women’s basketball team held their annual alumni game in Price Gymnasium. There were nine former players in attendance that spanned the last two decades of Hiram Women’s Basketball, with Wanda Hoffman ’87 and Deborah Wordell ’88 leading the “veterans”, and 2008 graduate Katie Grendel being the youngest returning player.
The players were split into two teams, and played two spirited ten-minute halves of basketball. The Gray Team jumped out to an early lead, and just held on to edge the Red Team by a final score of 34 – 31. Players from the current varsity team participated in the festivities with Kelsey Durichko and Tiffany Shields serving as referees, while Alex Dellas and Ashley Drum coached the Gray Team, and Jess Cowan and Brittany Mayle coached the Red Team.
The Red Team was led by the ball-handling skills of Wanda Hoffman and the three-point shooting of Jenny Hatfield, with Sarah Martin and Deborah Wordell pounding the boards and scoring often underneath.
The Gray Team was led by the hot-shooting Cassie Bedard, who took scoring honors for both teams, along with strong guard play from Allison Davis and Debra Barb, with Katie Grendel and Tania Carman rebounding and scoring consistently in the paint.
Both teams posed with Coach Preston and the varsity players for pictures at halftime, and all enjoyed a buffet reception after the game.
Free workshop at the New York Times

Are you a communications student or just interested in newspapers? Would you like to learn more about how a large newspaper works? Then why not attend a full-day workshop hosted by the New York Times!
The workshop is titled “Inside the Times” and will be held at the Times’ offices at 620 Eighth Avenue in New York City, 15th Floor, Conference Center Room 15W4-121 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Friday, March 20, 2009.
This workshop provides an unusual opportunity for you to meet with reporters and editors from the nation’s premier newspaper, explore the role of newspapers in contemporary society, discuss all aspects of publishing, hone their journalistic skills, and meet your peers working on campus newspaper staffs across the country. There is no registration fee, and lunch will be provided. Participants or their colleges will be expected to pay hotel and transportation costs.
The deadline for registering is Friday, March 13. The Times can accommodate approximately 100 students, and participation is on a first-come, first-served basis, with preference given to students at institutions that are members of the CIC/NYT Partnership.

“Inside The Times”

The CIC/New York Times Partnership is pleased to announce a full-day workshop hosted by The New York Times for student newspaper editors who attend colleges and universities that are members of the Council of Independent Colleges.
The meeting will be held in New York City at the Times at 620 Eighth Avenue. Lunch will be provided. Students should arrive at the Times no later than 9:45 a.m. to check in. The Times can accommodate 130 students, so the first to respond will be ensured participation.
Please note that due to heightened security at the Times, luggage is not permitted in the building—students must make alternative arrangements for storing their luggage. Backpacks are acceptable.
Program Description:
Student newspaper editors will have the opportunity to work directly with the Times newsroom to explore the role of a newspaper in contemporary society and to develop their journalistic skills. Students will meet with correspondents, editors, and others from the Times to discuss the various aspects of the newspaper from the newsroom and editorial to advertising. They will also participate in a workshop on the editing process. Finally, there will be time to interact with other student editors from around the country.
Participants:
Each campus can send up to two students. While it is preferred that student newspapers send the current editor and the incoming editor, campuses may invite the most appropriate student representatives. There is no registration fee, although participants must pay their own travel and accommodation expenses.

“Flicks with Friends” continues in February

“Flicks with Friends: The Friends of the Library Film Series” will continue with “The Pope’s Toilet,” a film from Uruguay in Spanish with English subtitles. The film will be shown Wednesday, February 4 at 7:15 p.m. in the Pritchard Room of the library.
The film is set in Melo, an Uruguayan town on the Brazilian border. It is 1988 and the town is waiting the visit of Pope John Paul II. With 50,000 people expected to be there, the townspeople are thinking how to get rich from the visit, mostly by selling food and drink. But, Beto, a small-time smuggler, has a better idea – build an outdoor toilet and charge for its use.
Women’s Basketball Loses Hard Fought Battle Against Kenyon College in Overtime

GAMBIER, OHIO — The Hiram College women’s basketball team lost a hard fought battle against Kenyon College tonight (Thursday, Jan. 29) in overtime, 56-55, in a North Coast Athletic Conference game in Gambier. [Game Stats]
Following tonight’s game, the Terriers are now 5-12 overall and 3-5 in the NCAC. The Ladies improve to 7-11 overall and 6-4 NCAC.
Kenyon began the game with a 6-0 scoring run, but Hiram responded with four unanswered points to make the score 6-4 at the 15:24 mark. Following a Kenyon three-pointer, the Terriers went on an 8-0 run that ended in a layup by junior forward Alex Dellas (Willoughby Hills/South) giving Hiram its first lead of the game at 12-9 with 9:02 to go in the half. Hiram led by as many as five points on several occassions including a 23-18 mark with 1:24 left in the period thanks to one-of-two free-throws by Dellas. The Ladies tallied the final four points of the half to cut the Hiram lead to 23-22 at the intermission.
Hiram recorded its largest margin of the game of eight points on two occassions with the last one being a 40-32 advantage with 12:27 to play as the result of a bucket by sophomore forward Erica DeLuca (Chardon/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin). Kenyon later rallied with a 9-1 run to regain the lead, 51-48, with 2:11 to go. But an ensuing triple by junior guard Brittany Mayle (Mantua/Crestwood) evened the game at 51-51 with under two minutes left. Mayle’s three-pointer would be the final points of regulation resulting a 51-51 tie and sending the game into overtime.
In the overtime period, a layup by sophmore guard Jess Cowan (Hiram/Crestwood) gave Hiram a 55-53 edge with 2:19 on the clock. Kenyon then connected on a triple on its ensuing possession grabbing a 56-55 lead at the 2:09 mark. Neither team would find the bottom of the net in the final 2:09 as the Ladies held on for a 56-55 overtime win.
Kenyon had one player score in double figures in Kathleen Williams who scored a game-high 17 points on six-of-16 shooting (37.5 percent). She also grabbed a team-tying high nine rebounds. Laura Goehrke also grabbed nine boards for the Ladies.
Hiram had two players in double digits with Dellas and junior forward Ashley Drum (Parma/Valley Forge) each scoring ten points. Dellas also pulled down a game and career-high 15 rebounds.
Hiram will return home to take on Denison University on Saturday, Jan. 31 in a NCAC contest at Price Gymnasium. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.

HIRAM, OHIO — Sophomore guard Chris Roberts (Cleveland/Kennedy) scored a game-high 24 points as the Hiram College men’s basketball team extended its winning streak to four games with a 66-55 win against Kenyon College tonight (Thursday, Jan. 29) in a North Coast Athletic Conference game at Price Gymnasium. With the win, the Terriers are now 13-5 overall and 8-1 in the NCAC. In addition to winning its fourth straight game, Hiram has also now won seven of its last eight games. The Lords fall to 11-7 overall and 5-4 NCAC.
Kenyon led by four points, 12-8, in the early minutes of the first half when Hiram responded with a 20-6 scoring run that ended with a three-pointer by freshman guard Andrew Wiegand (Amherst/Firelands) that gave the Terriers a 28-18 lead with 6:35 left to play in the period. The Hiram shooters then went cold as the Terriers fell into a 6:33 scoring drought allowing the Lords to take a 29-28 lead at the 2:27 mark. Hiram ended the slump by scoring the final points of the half and took a 33-29 advantage heading into the locker rooms.
Roberts tallied 15 of his 24 points in the second half as the Terriers recorded their largest lead of the game, 56-47 thanks to one of three triples by Roberts with 2:55 to go. Kenyon got to within six points on two occassions with the last one coming at the 1:33 mark with the score of 58-52. But that would be as close as the Lords would get as Hiram converted six straight free-throws in the final 50 seconds to secure a 66-55 victory.
Kenyon had a better field goal percentage at 43.5 percent (20-of-46), but shot just 16.7 percent (two-of-12) from three-point range. Hiram shot 37.7 percent (26-of-69) from the floor and outrebounded the Lords, 44-31.
Kenyon was led by Dave Knapke with 15 points on six-of-nine shooting (66.7 percent) and grabbed a game-high 10 boards. Bryan Yelvington and Anthony Chun were the only other Lords to score in double figures with 10 points each.
Hiram was led by Roberts’ 24 points on nine-of-16 shooting (56.3 percent), including shooting three-of-four (75.0 percent) from behind the arc, and grabbing a team-tying high six rebounds. Wiegand finished the game with 11 points, including three triples (three-of-nine overall) and six boards. Sophomore forward Hassan Muhammed (Akron/Buchtel) rounded out the Terrier high scorers with 10 points.
Hiram will look to keep its momentum going when it travels to Springfield for a NCAC matchup against Wittenberg University on Saturday, Jan. 31. The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
