Baseball Edged by Baldwin-Wallace College
April 29, 2009
BEREA, OHIO — The Hiram College baseball team fell shy of Baldwin-Wallace College, 3-2, today (Wednesday, Apr. 29) in a non-conference single nine-inning game at Heritage Field in Berea. [Game Stats]
With the loss, the Terriers drop to 2-29 overall while the Yellow Jackets improve to 18-17 overall for the season.
The game remained tied at 0-0 until the top of the fourth inning when Hiram tallied the game’s first run that was set up by a triple by sophomore infielder Andy Richey (Petersburg/Springfield Local) in the second Terrier at-bat of the inning and later scored on a fielding error to take a 1-0 lead. Hiram held on to its one-run lead until the bottom of the eighth when B-W crossed the plate twice to take a 2-1 advantage. The lead didn’t last long as the Terriers scored the equalizer in the top of the ninth thanks to a RBI single by freshman infielder Randy Miller (Glenmont/West Holmes) that scored senior outfielder Mark Reifsnyder (Tallmadge) who began the inning with a lead-off double. The Yellow Jackets would get their lead-off batter on base in the bottom of the inning and advanced the runner to third on a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch. B-W then scored the game-winning run on a defensive error to claim a 3-2 victory.
Hiram recorded five hits in the game with five different Terrier players each recording a base hit.
On the mound, freshman Ian Patzius (Vista, Calif./Vista) started the game and pitched eight innings, but suffered his fifth loss of the season, dropping him to 0-5 for the season. He allowed three runs on eight hits and struck out three batters. Sophomore Andy Marsh (Orwell/Grand Valley) pitched a third of an inning and gave up one hit.
Hiram is scheduled to host the University of Pittsburgh-Greensburg in a non-conference doubleheader tomorrow (Thursday, Apr. 30) in the home and season finale. The first game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.

HIRAM, OHIO — The Hiram College softball team will be one of four teams in this season’s North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament that begins on Friday (May 1). It will be the third straight appearance for the Terriers in the conference postseason. [Tournament Website]
The Terriers will be the number two seed, thier highest ranking, and will play against third seeded Allegheny (Pa.) College in their first game on Friday. Denison University is the top seed and will host this year’s tourney in Granville. The Big Red will take on fourth-seeded Ohio Wesleyan University.
Hiram ended the regular season with a 10-4 conference record, including winning five of its last six games this past week. The Terriers have already set a school single-season record for wins with 23 (23-14 overall) and will look to continue their recent success.

2009 Athletic Department Awards
April 28, 2009
The athletic department presents several named awards each year to individual student-athletes in recognition of their athletic accomplishments.
Recipients for the 2008 – 2009 academic year are:
Donald M. Campbell Memorial Award
2009 Recipient: Trevor Henderson
Awarded each year to the College’s outstanding male student-athlete. It was established in 1961, as suggested by the then editor of the school newspaper, as an award to honor the outstanding male athlete of the year. Named after the newspaper, it was originally called the Terrier Award. In 1970, it was changed to the Donald M. Campbell, Jr. Award to honor one of our former athletes who lost his life in a house fire while attempting to save his parents’ lives.
Helen M. Petrosky Award
2009 Recipient: Whitney Dropsey
Established by the Department of Physical Education in honor of a former faculty member and chair for 29 years, “Miss Pete.” Awarded each year to the College’s outstanding female student-athlete.
Charles A. Henry Award
2009 Recipient: Alex Ream
Established and endowed by family and friends in memory of Charles A. Henry ’20. The award is to commemorate the memory of a man who was associated with the college for 60 years as a student, an All-Ohio football player, admission director, coach, alumni secretary and originator of Alumni Annual Giving. He was “Mr. Hiram.” Awarded each year to the College’s outstanding male or female in the junior class.
Congressman Tim Ryan Will Deliver 2009 Commencement Address
April 28, 2009

Congressman Tim Ryan, representing Ohio’s 17th Congressional District, will deliver the address during Hiram College’s commencement ceremony on May 16, 2009.
Congressman Ryan is currently serving in his fourth term as a member of Congress where he champions efforts to revitalize America’s economy, encourage manufacturing, improve health care, develop renewable energy and make college more affordable. Following the elections of 2006, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi assigned Congressman Ryan to the powerful House Appropriations Committee. He also serves on the Democratic Steering Policy Committee, an advisory board to the Speaker and is co-chairman of the Congressional Manufacturing Caucus.
“Congressman Ryan is a rising star in national politics whose accomplishments outpace his young age,” said Hiram College President Thomas V. Chema. “He is a public servant who instills a sense of hope that government can be a working partner to improving our country.”
A graduate of Bowling Green State University and the Franklin Pierce Law Center in Concord, N.H., Congressman Ryan began his career as a congressional aide with the U.S. House of Representative and later served as an intern for the Trumbull County Prosecutor’s Office. He was elected to the Ohio Senate in 2000 where he served as the ranking minority member of the Senate Ways and Means Committee. On January 4, 2003 he was sworn in as a member of the 108th Congress at the age of 29.
This year’s graduating class includes 172 traditional students, 63 Weekend College students, and 7 graduate students in the Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies program.
The commencement ceremony begins at 2 p.m. on the Campus Green. The rain location is the Coleman Sports Center. Commencement is free and open to the public, but tickets are required in the event of rain.
Senior Softball Player Stephanie Zunic Named NCAC Player of the Week
April 28, 2009

CLEVELAND, OHIO — Hiram College softball player and senior two-time All-North Coast Athletic Conference shortstop Stephanie Zunic (Canfield) has been named this week’s NCAC Player of the Week. Hiram has now had a player earn conference player or pitcher of the week honors in three of the past four weeks. [NCAC Release]
Zunic helped lead the Terriers to a 5-1 record this past week that included a pair of two-game sweeps against Oberlin College and Ohio Wesleyan University. Hiram’s other victory came in a doubleheader split against Denison University on Senior Day. Hiram is currently 23-14 overall and ended the regular season with a 10-4 mark in conference play. The Terriers’ 23 wins breaks the single season record of 22 victories that was set during the 2007 season.
Individually, Zunic batted an even .500 at the plate (11-of-22) in six games and tallied a team-leading five doubles, seven runs scored and seven runs batted in. Her five doubles brought her season total to 17 which surpassed her own school single-season record of 16 in 2008. In addition, Zunic had 14 putouts, 10 assists and had a .960 fielding percentage defensively.
For the season, Zunic leads the team in six statistical categories including batting average (.415), at-bats (135), hits (56), doubles (17), on-base percentage (.456) and defensive assists (79). She is also tied for the team lead in runs scored (30) and is tied for second in RBI (22). In addition, her hits and double totals are tops in the conference.
Zunic currently owns three single-season Hiram records that include at-bats (137), hits (56), doubles (17) and four career marks in at-bats (520), runs scored (101), hits (188) and doubles (55).
Hiram qualified for this year’s NCAC Tournament and will make its third straight trip to the conference postseason. The Terriers have earned the number two seed, their highest ranking, and will play against third-seeded Allegheny (Pa.) College in their first game on Friday, May 1 at 10 a.m. Denison University is the top seed and will host the tournament. The Big Red will face No. 4 seed Ohio Wesleyan on Friday at noon in Granville.
