HIRAM, OHIO — Junior guards Glenn Campbell (Akron/Buchtel) and Deon Milton (Oxon Hill, Md./Seed Charter) both equaled their career marks in points scored with 18 and 16 points respectively to lead the Hiram College men’s basketball team past Ohio Wesleyan University, 79-71, today (Saturday, Jan. 30) in a North Coast Athletic Conference game at Price Gymnasium. [Game Stats]
With the win, the Terriers improve to 9-10 overall and 6-4 in the NCAC. The Battling Bishops now have indentical records of 9-10 overall and 6-4 NCAC.
Hiram looked to make a statement early in the first half and avenge an earlier season loss to the Bishops by leading by as many as 10 points, 18-8, at the 12:47 mark thanks to a three-pointer by freshman guard Alan Sheppard (Wadsworth). OWU answered with an 8-0 scoring run and eventually tied the game at 19-19 with 10:14 left to play in the period. The Terriers never relinquished the lead and had a six-point advantage on several occassions in the final minutes, including a 40-34 margin with 20 seconds left on a successful layup by sophomore forward Jamaal Watkins (South Euclid/Brush). The Bishops recorded the final points of the half on one-of-two free-throws as Hiram led 40-35 at the intermission.
In the second half, Hiram looked to take control with a 12-point lead, 53-41, thanks to another triple by Sheppard with 14:56 left to play. But OWU would not go away and cut the lead to 56-53 at the 9:41 mark. With the margin remaining three points, 61-58, with just under five minutes to go, Hiram put the game away for good with an 11-0 run that ended in a pair of free-throws by junior forward Hassan Muhammad (Akron/Buchtel) that gave the Terriers their largest lead of the game of 14 points, 72-58, with 2:40 to play. The Bishops got to within single figures in the final minutes, but the earlier Hiram lead was too great as the Terriers went on to the 79-71 final.

January 27, 2010
HIRAM, OHIO — Junior forward Caitlyn Ruese (Strongsville) scored a career-tying high 16 points and sophomore guard Kelsey Durichko (Brunswick) grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds as the Hiram College women’s basketball team ended a four-game losing streak with a 64-63 victory against The College of Wooster tonight (Wednesday, Jan. 27) in a North Coast Athletic Conference game at Price Gymnasium. [Game Stats]
With the win, the Terriers improve to 3-15 overall and 2-7 in the NCAC. The Fighting Scots fall to 7-11 overall and 4-5 NCAC.
Hiram took an early lead in the first half, but an 8-0 scoring run by Wooster gave the Scots an 8-4 lead at the 14:09 mark and never trailed in the period again. The Scots led by as many as seven points on two occassions, including a 24-17 edge with 7:21 left in the half. After almost a two minute scoring drought by both teams, junior guard Jess Cowan (Hiram/Crestwood) sparked a 6-0 mini scoring run to cut the deficit to 24-23 with 4:26 left before the break. Wooster responded by building its lead back to six points with just under two minutes to go, but Hiram fought back again and tied the game at 31-31 thanks to a pair of free-throws by junior forward Alex Dellas (Willoughby Hills/South) with 44 seconds on the clock. Wooster scored the final points of the period for a 33-31 advantage at the break.
In the second half, the period featured nine lead changes and four ties. Hiram recorded its first lead since early in the game at the 18:03 mark on a layup by Ruese making the score 35-34. Wooster would later find itself with its familiar six-point lead, 47-41, with 13:18 left to play, but eight unaswered points by the Terriers that ended in a jumper by senior guard Brittany Mayle (Mantua/Crestwood) gave Hiram a 49-47 edge with 10:25 to go. Both teams exchanged leads and Hiram took the lead for good with 6:01 left on a triple by Cowan and led by as many as four points on several occassions, including a score of 64-60 thanks to what turned out to be two critical free-throws by Mayle with four seconds left. Wooster would connect on its desperation three-point shoot as time expired, but the two earlier free-throws by Mayle gave Hiram the 64-63 victory.
Wooster had two players in double figures led by Kym Wenz’s game-high 28 points on nine-of-19 shooting (47.4 percent), including a perfect seven-of-seven from the free-throw line.
