Softball Loses a Pair of Games Against Denison University

GRANVILLE, OHIO  –  The Hiram College softball team lost a pair of games against Denison University, 5-4 and 2-0, tonight (Friday, Apr. 30) in a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader in Granville.  [Game One Stats] [Game Two Stats]

With the losses, the Terriers are now 18-15 overall and 7-5 in the NCAC.  The Big Red improve to 25-13 overall and 9-3 NCAC.

In game one, Hiram scored the first run of the game in the top of the first inning on a RBI double by freshman designated hitter/first baseman Alee Singer (Akron/Dayton) to give the Terriers an early 1-0 lead.  Denison tied the game with a score in the bottom of the second and took the lead with a three-run third giving the Big Red a 4-1 advantage.  Hiram then got to within a run on a two-RBI single by senior two-time All-NCAC pitcher/outfielder Whitney Dropsey (Ashland/Hillsdale) in the top of the fourth narrowing the gap to 4-3.  But Denison added a run of its own in the bottom half of the inning to increase the margin to 5-3.  The Terriers would make some noise in their final at-bats and would score on a wild pitch with two outs, but would not cross home plate again as Denison hung on for the 5-4 victory.

Hiram would outhit Denison, 12-9, and was led by Dropsey and freshman Megan Troxell (New Richmond) who both finished three-of-four at the plate.  Dropsey would also add two RBI while Troxell had a run scored.  Junior first baseman Kelly Langland (Batavia/McNicholas) added a pair of hits going two-of-four and scored a run.

On the mound, Dropsey pitched the entire game, but suffered the loss and is now 13-9 overall.  She allowed five runs on nine hits and struck out five batters in six innings.

In the nightcap, Denison took an early lead scoring runs in the first and second innings for a 2-0 advantage.  The two scores would prove to be all that the Big Red would need as Hiram tallied four hits in the game, but no runs, and went on to the 2-0 final.

Dropsey was the only Hiram player to record multiple hits finishing two-of-three at the plate. 

Dropsey would also pitch a complete game in the nightcap, but would fall to 13-10 overall for the season after allowing two runs on seven hits and struck out two batters.

Hiram will return to action tomorrow (Saturday, May 1) with a NCAC doubleheader against Wittenberg University in the regular season and home finale at Myrtis E. Herndon Field.  It will also be senior day with the first game scheduled to begin at noon.

Safford Traveling to China for Third Fulbright-Hays Seminar

Professor of Art History Lisa B. Safford has been selected to participate in the 2010 Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad: History and Culture in China. She will visit four cities in China in July, including Beijing, Xian and Shanghai. The National Committee on United States-China Relations coordinates the travel and educational features of the trip.

Safford says, “This is my third participation in a Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad. The first two were in Japan in 1997 and India and 2003.  Those programs resulted in the development of courses in the Art of India and Japanese Art that are offered on a regular basis at the college as well as several published articles and book reviews in Asian art.”

Softball Sweeps Oberlin College in NCAC Doubleheader

OBERLIN, OHIO   –  The Hiram College softball team swept Oberlin College, 6-0 and 13-2 in five innings, today (Wednesday, Apr. 28) in a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader at Culhane Field in Oberlin.  [Game One Stats] [Game Two Stats]

With the sweep, the Terriers improve to 18-13 overall and 7-3 in the NCAC.  The Yeowomen fall to 4-30 overall and 1-11 NCAC.

In game one, both teams remained scoreless until the top of the third inning when Hiram tallied four runs that included a two-RBI single by freshman designated hitter/first baseman Alee Singer (Akron/Dayton).  The Terriers added two more runs in the seventh thanks to a two-run homerun by junior first baseman Kelly Langland (Batavia/McNicholas), her second homerun of the season, to increase the lead to 6-0.  Solid team defense and pitching by senior two-time All-NCAC pitcher/outfielder Whitney Dropsey (Ashland/Hillsdale) held Oberlin scoreless throughout as Hiram went on to win by the final of 6-0.

Hiram had 11 hits in the opening game and was led by Langland who went two-of-three with two runs scored and three RBI.  Three other Terriers each recorded a pair of hits.  Singer finished the game two-of-four with two RBI.  Sophomore outfielder Marlene Smith (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity) went two-of-three and aadded a run scored.  Freshman shortstop Megan Troxell (New Richmond) finished two-of-three.

Dropsey pitched all seven innings to pick up her 12th win of the season to improve to 12-8 overall.  She also claimed her fourth shutout victory of the season allowing just four hits and striking out nine batters.

In game two, Hiram grabbed an early 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the first on a RBI single by Singer.  The Terriers added two more runs in the third thanks to another RBI single by Singer and a RBI single by sophomore third baseman Ashley Pike (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) to lead 3-0.  Oberlin got on the board with a run in the bottom of the third, but Hiram blew the game open with 10 runs in the fourth resulting in a commanding 13-1 margin.  The Yeowomen scored a run in the fourth, but would not cross home plate again as Hiram went on to cruise to a 13-2 victory in five innings.

Hiram finished game two with 14 hits and was led by senior second baseman Ashley Crowder (North Lewisburg/Triad) and Singer who were two of four Terriers with a pair of hits.  Crowder went two-of-three at the plate with two runs scored.  Singer finished two-of-three with a run scored and two RBI.  Pike ended the game two-of-three with a run scored and a RBI.  Troxell rounded out the multi-hit performances going two-of-two with a run scored.

On the hill, Dropsey started the game and went three innings to claim the victory and improve to 13-8 overall.   She allowed just one run on four hits and had two strikeouts.  Junior Sarah Padilla (Ontario, Calif./Colony) and sophomore Alati Gagne (Gorham, N.H./Gorham) each pitched an inning of relief.  Padilla gave of one run on two hits while striking out one batter.  Gagne allowed no runs and just one hit.

Hiram will play a pivotal NCAC doubleheader on Friday, Apr. 30 against Denison University in Granville.  The first game is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.

Baseball Defeated by Westminster (Pa.) College in Season Finale

HIRAM, OHIO  –  The Hiram College baseball team was defeated by Westminster (Pa.) College, 7-5 and 13-10, in a non-conference doubleheader and season finale today (Wednesday, Apr. 28) at Robert O. Fishel Field on senior day.  [Game One Stats] [Game Two Stats]

Following today’s games, the Terriers end the season with a 6-31 overall record.  The Titans improve to 11-20 overall for the season.

In game one, Westminster struck first scoring three runs in the top of the first inning.  But Hiram answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning on a two-run homerun by senior All-North Coast Athletic Conference catcher Justin Street (Warren/Howland), his second homerun of the season, to cut the deficit to 3-2.  The Titans added another run in the second to extend their lead to 4-2.  Hiram then evened the score at 4-4 with two runs thanks to a solo homer by freshman outfielder Ian Sewolich (Cleveland/St. Ignatius), his team-leading fourth of the season, and a RBI double by junior outfielder Doug Adkins (Frazeysburg/Riverview).  Westminster regained the lead with a three-run fifth inning and Hiram tallied one run in the sixth on a RBI single by sophomore infielder Steve Dunn (Westlake).  But it would not be enough as the Titans went on to capture game one by the final of 7-5.

Hiram was led at the plate by Adkins who finished two-of-three with a run scored and a RBI.  Five other Terriers each recorded a base hit despite the loss.

On the mound, junior Andy Marsh (Orwell/Grand Valley) started the game and pitched an inning allowing three runs on three hits.  Junior Chris Wilson (Geneva) came on to pitch three-and-a-third innings of relief, but suffered his fourth loss of the season, dropping him to 1-4 overall.  He allowed four runs on four hits and had two strikeouts.  Fellow junior Bubba Thurner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Brashear) pitched the final two and two-thirds innings giving up just one hit and struck out three batters.

In the nightcap, both teams would be tied at 2-2 after the first inning of play with Hiram’s runs coming on a two-run homerun by sophomore infielder Randy Miller (Glenmont/West Holmes), his second of the season.  The Terriers took the lead thanks to a three-run second inning highlighted by a two-RBI single by freshman pitcher/infielder Travis Richey (Petersburg/Springfield Local), making the score 5-2.  Westminster answered by scoring six runs in the top of the third, that included a grand slam, and added two more runs in the fourth to lead 10-5.  Hiram got to within 10-8 after scoring three runs in the bottom of the fourth that included a two-RBI single by Miller with bases loaded.  The Titans got some breathing room with a run in the sixth, but the Terriers crossed the plate twice in the bottom of the inning thanks to a two-RBI single by Dunn to pull to within a run at 11-10.  Westminster scored two insurance runs in the seventh, that included a lead-off solo homerun, and hung on for a 13-10 victory.

Hiram totaled 10 hits in game two and was led by junior infielder Cody Fincham (Windham) who finished a perfect two-of-two with three runs scored and a RBI.  Miller also ended the game with a pair of hits and went two-of-three overall with one run scored and four RBI.  Travis Richey went one-of-two with three runs scored and two RBI.

Freshman Mike LaLonde (Willowick/South) started at pitcher in the nightcap and went two-and-third innings, but was given the loss and ends the season with a 1-2 overall record.  He allowed seven runs on six hits and struck out four batters.  Freshman Josh Weber (Lorain/Clearview) came on in the third inning and pitched an inning of relief giving up three runs on four hits.  Travis Richey pitched the final three and two-thirds innings and allowed three runs on four hits and had two strikeouts.

Matthew Ashton ’03 Lands a Big Fish

Matthew Ashton and Thomas J. Near have published the paper, “Threatened fishes of the world: Percina bimaculata (Haldeman, 1844) (Percidae: Etheostomatinae),” in the prestigious journal “Environmental Biology of Fishes” (Environ Biol Fish (2010) 88:37–38). The article is in the May 2010 issue and appeared online in February.

Ashton also researched the famous snail darter while working on his master’s degree.

Students Win Prizes for Ethics Essays

Congratulations to the winners of the second annual First Year Ethics Essay Contest:

First Place and winner of $200: Rachel Petrack, a sophomore philosophy major, for “Complicity: What it is and Why it Matters.”

Second Place and winner of $100: Elizabeth Haase, a sophomore undecided major, for “Emotional Complicity.”

Third Place and winner of $75: Amy Morton, a sophomore undecided major, for “Releasing Complicity.”

This year, the prompt the first years had to write on was “What does it mean to be complicit? How do you define complicity? In your essay you might want to reflect on a specific personal experience or interest: how have you or others been complicit? You could also connect complicity to a theme related to your FSEM. Good essays discuss different possible interpretations of complicity and address the ethical implications of the topic on both individual and universal levels.”

The essays were judged by Jon Moody, professor emeritus and former Foote Chair in Ethics and director of the Center for the Study of Ethics and Values. The students who ran the contest were Caroline Christoff ’12, Karen Cover ’10 and Jared Wolschlager ’11.

This contest is co-sponsored by the Center for the Study of Ethics and Values and the Lindsay-Crane Center for Writing and Literature.

Join them every Wednesday evening for an hour or two of stimulating conversation with local entrepreneurs. Baseball Loses a Pair of Games Against The College of Wooster in Rain Shortened Doubleheader

WOOSTER, OHIO  –  The Hiram College baseball team lost a pair of games against The College of Wooster today (Sunday, Apr. 25) in the final North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader of the season at Art Murray Field in Wooster.  The Terriers lost the first game, 18-4, and lost the second game, 5-1, in six innings.  [Game One Stats] [Game Two Stats]

With the losses, Hiram is now 6-29 overall and 1-15 in the NCAC.  The Fighting Scots improve to 31-7 overall and 13-3 NCAC.

In game one, Wooster took the early lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning, but Hiram tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the second on a RBI single by freshman pitcher/infielder Travis Richey (Petersburg/Springfield Local).  The Scots took control of the game with six runs in the bottom of the inning as part of a 13-run scoring spree as Wooster added four runs in the third and three in the fourth to lead 14-1.  The Terriers added two runs in the sixth thanks to a two-run homerun by sophomore outfielder Lance Townsend (Garrettsville), his third homerun of the season, making the score 14-3.  But Wooster answered by scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth to increase the lead to 18-3.  Hiram scored the final run of the game in the seventh on a RBI single by sophomore infielder Randy Miller (Glenmont/West Holmes), but the Scots would cruise to an 18-4 final.

Hiram recorded seven hits in the game with seven different Terriers each reaching base safely with a base hit.  Townsend ended the game one-of-two at the plate with a two runs scored and two RBI.  Travis Richey also finished one-of-two and had a RBI.

Sophomore pitcher John Colla (Austintown/Ursuline) started the first game and pitched one and two-thirds innings allowing seven runs on five hits.  He was credited with the loss and is now 0-5 for the season.  Junior Bubba Thurner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Brashear) pitched two-and-a-third innings of relief giving up seven runs on nine hits.  Junior Eric Schaffer (Kent/Roosevelt) pitched the final two innings allowing four runs on eight hits and struck out four batters.

In game two, Wooster led 5-0 after two innings of play scoring four runs in the first and another in the second.  Hiram tallied its only run in the fourth on a defensive error that allowed freshman outfielder Ian Sewolich (Cleveland/St. Ignatius) to score, narrowing the gap to 5-1.  The score remained 5-1 after six innings when the game would be delayed due to heavy rain.  The game would later be called because of the conditions resulting in a 5-1 victory for the Scots.

Hiram totaled three hits with Sewolich, senior All-NCAC catcher Justin Street (Warren/Howland) and senior All-NCAC infielder Kyle Kovach (Garfield Heights) each recording a base hit.  Sewolich also added the run scored.

Travis Richey pitched all five-and-a-third innings, but would suffer his sixth loss of the season to fall to 0-6 overall.  He allowed five runs on eight hits and struck out two batters.

Hiram is scheduled to host Westminster (Pa.) College on Wednesday, Apr. 28 in a non-conference doubleheader and season finale.  It will also be senior day with the first game scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. at Robert O. Fishel Field.

Men’s Golf Finishes 13th at The College of Wooster Nye Invitational

WOOSTER, OHIO  –  The Hiram College men’s golf team placed 13th after the final round of the annual Nye Invitational today (Saturday, Apr. 24) hosted by The College of Wooster at the Wooster Country Club in Wooster.  [FINAL Results]

The Terriers posted a two-day combined score of 698 strokes (345+353=698) to place 13th overall.  Malone University won the overall event with a team total of 590 strokes (291+299=590).  Baldwin-Wallace College was second at 607 strokes (301+306=607) and John Carroll University rounded out the top three schools with 624 strokes (316+308=624).

Individually, junior Andy Deehr (Cortland/Champion) led Hiram with a two-day total 164 strokes (84+80=164) and placed in a tie for 40th.  Sophomore Bob Ritchie (Strongsville/Brunswick) shot a pair of 85′s to finish second on the team with 170 strokes (85+85=170).  Sophomore Bryan Todd (Green) was third at 172 strokes (83+89=172) and junior Jon Rice (Toledo/Sylvania Southview) was fourth with 192 strokes (93+99=192).  Junior Michael Walton (Mineral Ridge) rounded out the Hiram scores with 214 strokes (104+110=214).

Hiram will wrap-up the 2009-10 season next Saturday-Sunday, May 1-2 at the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships hosted by Kenyon College.  The first round begins on Saturday at 9 a.m. at Apple Valley Golf Course in Gambier.

Baseball Swept by The College of Wooster

WOOSTER, OHIO  –  The Hiram College baseball team lost both games against The College of Wooster today (Saturday, Apr. 24) in a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader Art Murray Field in Wooster.  The Terriers dropped the first game, 14-0, and lost game two, 15-3.  [Game One Stats] [Game Two Stats]

Following today’s doubleheader, Hiram is now 6-27 overall and 1-13 in the NCAC.  The Fighting Scots improve to 29-7 overall and 11-3 NCAC.

In game one, the score remained 0-0 until the bottom of the third inning when Wooster tallied five runs as part of three straight innings that the Scots would put runs on the board.  Wooster went on to add four runs in the fourth and five more runs in the fifth en route to the 14-0 shutout.

Hiram recorded five hits at the plate with freshman outfielder Ian Sewolich (Cleveland/St. Ignatius) and sophomore infielder Steve Dunn (Westlake) each recording a pair of hits.  Sewolich finished the game a perfect two-of-two, while Dun went two-of-three.

Hiram would find more success at the plate in game two with eight hits led by the duo of Sewolich and Fincham who both finished two-of-three.  Sewolich also added a RBI, while Fincham scored a run.

Freshman pitcher Mike LaLonde (Willowick/South) got the knod in game two, but would suffer his first loss of the season, dropping him to 1-1 for the season.  He allowed seven runs on eight hits, while striking out three batters in four innings of work.  Sophomore Chris Wilson (Geneva) pitched two innings of relief and gave up eight runs on six hits and had two strikeouts.
