Women’s Basketball Defeated by Denison University

HIRAM, OHIO — Sophomore guard Jess Cowan (Hiram/Crestwood) scored a career-high 16 points, but it would not be enough as the Hiram College women’s basketball team was defeated by Denison University, 83-64, this afternoon (Saturday, Jan. 31) in a North Coast Athletic Conference game at Price Gymnasium. With the loss, the Terriers drop to 5-13 overall and 3-6 in the NCAC. The Big Red improve to 12-6 overall and 10-0 NCAC.
Denison led by six points, 17-11, near the midway point of the first half, but Hiram then responded by outscoring the Big Red, 17-9, giving the Terriers a 28-23 lead at the 7:46 mark. Hiram maintained a slight edge, 38-36, with 3:41 to play in the period thanks to a layup by Cowan. Denison ended the half with an 8-0 scoring run to regain the lead and take a 46-38 margin at the break.
Denison scored the first points of the second half to extend its lead to double figures for the first time in the game, 48-38, and pulled away leading by as many as 25 points, 79-54, at the 4:47 mark en route to the 83-64 final.
The Big Red had three players score in double digits led by Carolyn Simpson with a game-high 22 points on eight-of-14 shooting (57.1 percent). She aslo grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Shaina Kaiser was second with 14 points and Sarah Perrine added 12 points.
Hiram was led by Cowans’ 16 points on five-of-nine shooting (55.6 percent) from the field, including three-of-six (50.0 percent) from three-point range. Junior forward Ashley Drum (Parma/Valley Forge) was the only other Terrier in double figures with 12 points. Fellow junior forward Alex Dellas (Willoughby Hills/South) followed up a career-high game in rebonds earlier in the week with a game-high nine boards against Denison.
Hiram will begin a three-game road trip starting with a NCAC matchup against Allegheny College on Tuesday, Feb. 3 in Meadville, Pa. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
