Women’s Basketball Defeated by Wittenberg University

HIRAM, OHIO — The Hiram College women’s basketball team was defeated by Wittenberg University, 83-62, tonight (Friday, Feb. 5) in a North Coast Athletic Conference game at Price Gymnasium. [Game Stats]

With the loss, the Terriers are now 3-17 overall and 2-9 in the NCAC. The Tigers improve to 14-6 overall and remain perfect in conference play at 12-0.

Both teams played an entertaining and competitive first half with five ties and seven lead changes. Neither team would lead by more than four points until near the end of the period when Wittenberg outscored Hiram, 12-5, in the final 5:48 to have a 36-29 edge at halftime.

In the second half, the Tigers recorded their first double-digit lead at the 16:46 mark with the score of 45-35. But Hiram fought back and would later cut the deficit to three points, 51-48, on a jumper by senior All-NCAC forward Ashley Drum (Parma/Valley Forge) with 11:46 left to play. Wittenberg answered with a 10-2 scoring that put the Tigers back up by double figures, 61-50, with 8:58 to go and took control for good. The Tigers recorded their largest lead of the game of 21 points with the final score of 83-62.

Wittenberg shot an impressive 50.0 percent (34-of-68) from the field and held Hiram to 36.1 percent (22-of-61) shooting.

The Tigers were led in scoring by Carrie Dyer and Stephanie Boardman with game-highs of 19 points each. Dyer also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds and Boardman added six boards. Amber Lough rounded out the Wittenberg high scorers with 18 points.

Hiram had four players in double-digits led by senior forward Alex Dellas (Willoughby Hills/South) with 14 points on six-of-eight shooting (75.0 percent). Senior guard Brittany Mayle (Mantua/Crestwood) was second with 13 points and junior guard Jess Cowan (Hiram/Crestwood) added 11 points to go along with a team-high eight rebounds. Junior forward Caitlyn Ruese (Strongsville) completed the list of double-figure scorers with 10 points.

Hiram will host Earlham (Ind.) College tomorrow (Saturday, Feb. 6) in a NCAC game at Price Gym. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
